New Britain, CT- The FDU Women's soccer team (8-10-2)(6-2-2) played Central Connecticut State University (9-6-2)(7-1-2) today, November 3rd at 1PM in the Semifinal of the NEC championship. The #4 Knights upset #1 seeded CCSU to advance to the Final of the NEC Championship.
1st Half
- #4 FDU came out and weathered the storm of the first 15' with #1 CCSU controlling possession and dictating the flow of play.
- The Knights created two chances in the first 15' from corner kicks but could not test the keeper with either of the opportunities.
- In the 31' graduate student Madelyn Robbins played a perfect through ball from the right wing to set up Sophomore Aitana Martínez-Montoya with a chance, but keeper Caitlin Murphy was quick off her line and made a big save to keep the game level.
- The Burgundy and Blue created two big chances in the half and forced CCSU keeper to make one save in the half.
- The half was end-to-end and concluded with no goals scored by either side.
2nd Half
- Both sides settled into the game and played with more confidence once the second half kicked off.
- Sophomore keeper Malene Nielsen made a huge save in the 48' when Kelly Brady was through on net and Nielsen made a stop to concede a corner kick.
- On the ensuing corner kick, CCSU broke the deadlock when Victoria Violette pounced on the second ball and scored with her right foot to make it a 1-0 score.
- The Knights were not fazed by the goal and within 5 minutes scored the equalizer.
- FDU won a corner kick in the 54' that Graduate Student Lea Egner stepped up to take and scored a world-class Olimpico. Enger curled the ball in from the corner which ended up perfectly in the top right corner of the net to level the score.
- The Knights did not stop there as they kept pushing for the lead which they secured in the 65'. Freshman Andrea Ougaard won a free kick near midfield and graduate student Paula Ruess stepped up to take. The ball was placed perfectly in the danger area and Robbins got on the end of it and smashed it past the keeper with her head to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
- In the 77' CCSU had a big chance to level the score, but Nielsen made sure that would not happen. Aoife Horgan was in on net and Nielsen came up big by tipping the ball over the crossbar to keep the Knights in the lead.
- Every player on the FDU squad gave it their all and held the lead until the end of the match to secure their spot in the NEC Final match.
"The work ethic from the team today was outstanding today, especially in the second half the team really just went for it and put themselves in a position where they just wouldn't get denied. We always talk about being creative and making decisions on their own and today the team really showed their creativity and spirit off set pieces." Stated head coach Eric Teepe "We have to understand we still have to find a way to win on Sunday which is the ultimate goal, this was a big hurdle but by no means are we done with what we are here for."
The Knights will play in the Final of the NEC Championship against the winner of the Merrimack vs Sacred Heart Sunday, November 6th at a time TBD. #4 FDU will head on the road for this match and prepare for another exciting game on their road to the ring.
