FARMVILLE, Va. - FDU men's basketball clawed back to .500 (3-3, 0-0 NEC) on Sunday to end the JK54 Classic in Farmville on the right note, sliding past VMI 93-89 in a neck-and-neck battle down the stretch. The Knights would lead by as many as 16 points but found themselves in a hole with under a minute to go in regulation, though
Tobin Anderson's team wouldn't concede the lead at any point.
The duo of graduate student transfers
Demetre Roberts and
Grant Singleton combined for 42 points with both of the fifth-year guards posting identical marks of 21 points in the book and four made baskets from downtown a piece - elevating the Knights to snap a two-game skid on each of the first two days of the tournament.
Singleton's been on fire in the final two contests of the weekend at Willett Hall as the Sumter, S.C. product went from being held to just two points in the opener against SIUE to 24 points in yesterday's loss to Longwood and going off for 21 points in the JK54 Classic finale against the Keydets.
With the Knights in front by double-digits most of the afternoon, the Keydets clawed back with an 8-0 run beginning at the almost three-minute mark in the second half. FDU would go cold shooting 1-for-7 and without a bucket for two minutes and 30 seconds.
Junior
Sean Moore and sophomore
Ansley Almonor would platoon down the home stretch going for the win as the duo would switch for offense and defense as Spring Valley, N.Y. native Almonor would net 15 points and finish perfect from the stripe as both teams fouled to slow things down with under a minute to play. Four players in Burgundy and Blue would score in double figures as senior
Heru Bligen continued to light it up on his old court with 19 points on almost 86 percent shooting from the field.
FDU turns around to face Pitt on Tuesday, November 22 at 8:30 p.m. live on ACC Network.
