NEWARK – The Northeast Conference announced Wednesday during the league's annual Basketball Social Media Day that the Knights have been selected to finish second in the NEC's Coaches Preseason Poll. The Burgundy and Blue won 13 games in conference play last season en route to winning the NEC regular season title. FDU is looking to capitalize off their third-consecutive NEC tournament semifinal appearance. Wagner took home the top spot in the poll before FDU with the list rounding out with St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Francis U (Pa.), Merrimack, Sacred Heart, LIU, Central Connecticut and Stonehill.
"To be picked 2nd in the preseason ranking is an accomplishment because it shows our continued growth as a program, said head coach
Angelika Szumilo. "Our goal is to continue to get better every day and play our best basketball come February and March".
The NEC also announced during the event that junior guard
Chloe Wilson earned a slot on the 2022-23 Preseason All-NEC Team, as voted by the league's nine head coaches.
Wilson being named to the team is a recognition of the outstanding campaign she had last season, a year in which she averaged 12.1 points per game along with 6.4 rebounds a contest. The honor is now Wilson's third one as a Knight as last year she earned a spot Third Team All-NEC and garnered a nod on the NEC All-Tournament Team.
Head coach Szumilo said "This is a well-deserved recognition for Chloe. She's been working extremely hard in the off-season and has developed into a more mature player on both ends".
Wilson racked up double-figure point totals in 15 of 26 games that she appeared in during the season. Of those 15 games, eight of them saw her score at least 15 points, with her season-high of 24 coming against NJIT [11/24].
The Freeport, N.Y. native logged four double-digit rebounding performances with three of them being double-doubles. She recorded her first collegiate double-double against Merrimack [1/6] when she finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds helping the side to a 76-65 win over the Warriors.
Wilson will be a key contributor to the Knights this season when they take the court for the first time at Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. On Monday, November 7 at Marquette.
