Men's Basketball Heads to Staten Island for MLK Day Showdown with First-Place Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Coming off a nail-biting 77-71 loss at the hands of Sacred Heart on Friday, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team (1-11, 2-3 NEC) hits the road for the third-consecutive Northeast Conference game as the Knights head to first-place Wagner (9-2, 5-0 NEC) on Monday, January 17, at the Spiro Sports Center on Staten Island, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. live on NEC Front Row.

FDU received a win in the conference standings following Mount St. Mary's COVID-19 related forfeit on December 29 giving the Knights a 1-0 start in NEC play. Following the cancellations against Merrimack (January 6) and Bryant (January 8), FDU was assigned a loss in the NEC standings for each contest. The forfeits do not impact the Knights' overall record.

Scouting the Seahawks
The Wagner men's basketball team extended its win streak to six games with an 81-76 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn in a hard-fought battle on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center. After the Terriers cut their deficit to one with 2:05 to play on a three-pointer by Rob Higgins that made it 73-72, Wagner took a two-possession lead on a traditional three-point play by Raekwon Rogers, who led all scorers with 22 points on 8-12 shooting. The Seahawks outscored the Terriers 60-30 in the paint and earned the win despite not hitting a single three-pointer throughout the contest. After St. Francis jumped out to a double-digit lead with 6:51 to play in the first half, the Seahawks used an 8-0 run to take a 28-26 lead on a Martinez layup with 2:11 to play in the first half.

Scouting the Knights
Hitting the hardwood for the first time in 2022, the Knights made the trip out to Fairfield, Conn. to play for the first time in 15 days as conference action rolls on with a matchup against Sacred Heart. In a closely-fought battle, FDU's effort would come up short as the Knights fell to the Pioneers 77-71. Making his 12th start of the season, sophomore co-captain John Square Jr. paced the Knights with a team-leading 18 points and nine rebounds, five of which came off the offensive glass. Square was complimented by fellow co-captain, junior Devon Dunn, who contributed 17 points off the bench in 36 minutes of work for Greg Herenda's squad. Dunn also logged a team-high three steals in the bout, tying a career-best. Getting looks from underneath, the Knights recorded 32 points in the paint and 15 off turnovers. With four lead changes, the Knights adjusted to close the gap on what was a seven-point halftime deficit to comeback and out score SHU 41-40 in the second half at the Pitt Center. "Our guys played very hard but our execution and our ability to finish plays on both ends of the floor, remarked Herenda. "Now we turn around and head to Staten Island on Monday and face a really tough Wagner team."
