Women’s Soccer Falls in Double OT to Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (5-4-2, 2-1-0 NEC) fell for the first time in double overtime this season as Merrimack (2-6-2, 2-1-0 NEC) toppled them by a score of 2-1.

How it Happened

  • The Knights dominated possession early in the match, at one point logging a 9-0 advantage on shots over the Warriors.
  • Merrimack's defense held firm for a while, but it was a brilliant team goal capped off by a close-range finish from Aitana Martínez-Montoya in the 32'.
  • The Knights continued to keep up the pressure, ultimately ending the half with a 17-3 advantage on shots and an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Merrimack came out with renewed intensity in the second half, scoring a goal in the 55' to level the game at one.
  • Both sides continued to press forward, with Merrimack setting the tone in the second half, but it remained 1-1 after 90 minutes and we entered overtime.
  • Merrimack found the 'golden goal' just over a minute into the second overtime, ending the match.

Inside the Box Score

  • Despite the loss, the Knights outshot the Warriors 22-19 in total and 11-10 in shots on goal. Gina Steiner led all players with five shots and four of those coming on target.
  • Aitana Martínez-Montoya logged her third goal on the season, leading the way for the Knights. She was assisted on the goal by Kiomy Luperon, marking the second time the two freshmen combined for a goal this season.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"In the first half we did a good job of moving the ball quickly through the lines. We knew there would be a lot of pressure in our half of the field and we'd just have to find a way to play through them, which we did. We missed so many chances, eventually they're going to catch up to you. And, at the end of the day, [Merrimack] deserved it."

"We've got to gather ourselves again and get back to doing the things that we were doing really well earlier, and stopping taking things for granted."

What's Next
The Knights finish their road stand with a visit to Fairfield, Conn., as they are set to square off with Sacred Heart on Thursday, October 7, at 3 p.m.
