Women’s Soccer Knocks Off Sacred Heart in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CONN. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (6-4-2, 3-1-0 NEC) ended their road stand with a thrilling 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart (4-6-1, 2-3-0 NEC).

How it Happened

  • Aitana Martínez-Montoya took her first opportunity of the match on goal with both hands as she scored off a beautiful feed from fellow freshman Briana Esteves in the 15' to put FDU ahead 1-0.
  • Just minutes later, Malene Nielsen continued her brilliant form, making a point-blank save to keep the Knights ahead.
  • Martínez-Montoya came close to scoring twice more in the half, with the best chance coming off a free header in the box off a corner that was cleared away by a well-placed Pioneer defender.
  • The Knights would find a second goal early in the second half, again from Martínez-Montoya, who found the back of the net in the 50', helped by a delightful free kick in by Madelyn Robbins
  • The Pioneers applied pressure throughout the half, but could not breakthrough the FDU defense and the Knights would walk out 2-0 victors.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Knights attack was led by Aitana Martínez-Montoya who, in addition to her goal, led the way in shots with four and shots on goal with three.
  • It was a banner day for Briana Esteves who logged her first career point with her assist on Aitana Martínez-Montoya's first-half goal.
  • Malene Nielsen helmed the defense for yet another clean sheet, the seventh of the season and her collegiate career. Nielsen would make five saves over the course of the match.

Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"This is one that we just find a way to grind it out. We were under pressure from the opening kickoff, we had limited chances, but the chances we had we were dangerous. I felt last game we just were not dangerous enough with the ball, and I felt today we had some real good looks at goal. They had the possession of the game, but I felt that we had the better chances.

What's Next
The Knights return home on Sunday, October 10, for a battle with Central Connecticut State. The match will be at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
