Women’s Soccer Notches Thrilling Double Overtime Victory Over Seton Hall

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (2-2-1) logged a double overtime win over the Seton Hall Pirates (3-1-0) by a score of 1-0 thanks to a sublime finish by Aitana Martínez-Montoya

How it Happened

  • The first half was punctuated by a vital save in the 40' by Malene Nielsen, stopping a surefire goal from being scored.
  • The Knights survived three shots on target, a handful of dangerous set piece opportunities from the Pirates, and multiple injuries in defense in the second half to keep the score knotted at zero a piece.
  • The Knights' best chance in the second half came from the boot of Aitana Martínez-Montoya, when her long-range effort in the 74' went just wide.
  • The first overtime saw limited action, but in the second overtime, in the 108', Kiomy Luperon found Martínez-Montoya for a tap-in to start the celebrations in Teaneck.

Inside the Box Score

  • It was a day of firsts for the freshmen involved in the game-winning goal. The goal from Aitana Martínez-Montoya was the first of her collegiate career, while the assist from Kiomy Luperon was the first of her career as well. In addition to the goal, Martínez-Montoya logged six shots in the match, the most for either side.
  • Malene Nielsen made seven saves and kept her second clean sheet in her collegiate career, both coming in matches that went into double overtime. She was aided by a defense that saw seven players rotate into at least one of the four spots in the backline, emphasizing a full team effort in defense.

Coach Teepe's Thoughts

"I think for us, we're still trying to get to being a full team. We still have so many players that can't play, or can only play a little. It's one of those catch-22s – it's a good thing because other players have to learn how to step up and may get more time, but the second piece is that our game could be different. But I think we're taking slow steps forward and, obviously, you'll always take an overtime win."

"Both players [Luperon and Martínez-Montoya] are really important for us, and they play completely different games. In some ways, they did the opposite where normally you might see Monty be more of a playmaker and Ki being a player that fights through the attack. Our freshmen are really doing a good job for us, even the ones that didn't play today. They're training hard and when they get their chance, they're giving us something."

"I think we're doing a pretty good job closing up gaps and denying the ability of free shots, and Malene is just doing a really good job of protecting in those chances in behind. I really felt that today was the first day where we didn't give up a ton of chances."
