BALTIMORE, MD. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (2-2-2) played their second consecutive match that went into double overtime. While they held the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (2-3-1) to a shutout, they could not find a winner themselves despite an excellent effort, and the two sides drew 0-0.
How it Happened
- The Knights tested the Loyola Maryland netminder early with a couple efforts on target, but the half saw limited chances from either side.
- With just seconds remaining in the first half, a long-range Leighann Kafel effort from nearly midfield struck the crossbar, narrowly missing a stunning goal.
- The Knights saw the better of the run of play early in the second half, with efforts from Isabelle Udovc in the 54' and Paula Ruess in the 62' needing strong saves to be kept out of the net.
- In the 63', Malene Nielsen was called on to make her first big save of the evening on a well-struck free kick.
- Neither side could break through the other's stout defenses, and for the third time this season we went into overtime.
- Loyola Maryland went down a player in the final minute of the first overtime period, but they continued their strong effort on defense and the score remained tied at 0-0.
Inside the Box Score
- Malene Nielsen, for the second time this week, oversaw a clean sheet in net for the Knights. This is the freshman's third shutout of the season, all three coming in matches that went into double overtime. Nielsen made five saves in the match.
- Seven Knights combined for 11 shots directed towards the Greyhounds net, with six of those coming on target. Madelyn Robbins led the way with three shots, while Aitana Martínez-Montoya had two shots on goal, most of any Knight.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"I felt this was our best all-around game that we had so far. Especially the second half, I felt we did a great job of controlling the ball, creating chances, movement side-to-side, I felt we really stepped our game up in that half. I think it's a fair result for both teams, and I think it's another step forward in the right direction."
"Our mentality is all about building upon from one game on to the next, and we seem to be doing that right now, so we'll see if we can do that again later this week."
What's Next
The Knights return home for a pair of non-conference matches ahead of the NEC conference slate. They square off next against Stony Brook on Thursday, September 9, at 5 p.m., at University Stadium in Teaneck, N.J.
