Hausen’s Penalty Kick the Difference in 1-0 Victory Over LIU

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (5-3-2, 2-0-0 NEC) improved to 2-0-0 in NEC play on Sunday afternoon as they downed the LIU Sharks (0-4-2, 0-1-1 NEC) 1-0 at LIU Soccer Park in Brookville.

How it Happened

  • The Knights got on the board early thanks to a kick from the penalty spot by Naemi Hausen in the 12'.
  • The Knights dominated the run of play for the rest of the half, holding an 11-1 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes.
  • The second half saw the Burgundy and Blue perform admirably in defense, holding off challenges from an increasingly desperate LIU side to even the score.
  • The two teams each saw a player see a red card, sending them both down to ten women in the 88', but the Knights remained composed and saw out the 1-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Knights outshot the Sharks by a total of 16-7 in total, and 5-2 in shots on goal. This marks the fourth consecutive NEC game that FDU have outshot their opponents, a streak extending back into last season.
  • Gina Steiner led the way with two shots on goal, the only player on either side with multiple, while Aitana Martínez-Montoya logged four shots in total in the contest.
  • This marks the sixth clean sheet for Malene Nielsen this season, which makes for shutouts in 60% of her collegiate appearances, as well as the fifth clean sheet in the last six matches for her and the Knights.

Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"The good thing about today's match is that we had to play a completely different way based on how they played and also the conditions on the field, and we found a way. I felt we really dominated the first half and that's one of the learning lessons, that we really should've been up 3-0 at the half, but we didn't put our chances away and that made the second half a bit hectic for us. We could've made it much easier on ourselves, but I was happy."

"We had a tremendous, tremendous, effort from Madelyn Robbins today. I thought she had one of her best games of the year even though she didn't get on the scoreboard. She was just getting involved, taking players on, and creating chances. I also felt that Kiomy Luperon came off the bench and gave us so much off the bench. They didn't have a lot of chances, but the ones they had Malene did a good job cleaning up."

"The theory is always get a result on the road and win at home, but at the same time I think our expectations and our goals are a little bit higher than that. Now we have to go up against a tough team in Merrimack, who we let the game slip away against in the spring, so hopefully we've learned from that."

What's Next
The Knights will remain on the road as they venture to North Andover, Mass., where they will do battle with Merrimack on Thursday, September 30, at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
