TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (4-3-2, 1-0-0 NEC) got off to a stellar start in NEC play as they toppled Saint Francis U (Pa.) (2-6-0, 0-1-0 NEC) by a score of 3-0. The win marks three consecutive seasons for the Knights that their NEC campaigns have started with a victory.
How it Happened
- FDU got the party started early as, in the 16', Naemi Hausen fed a beautiful pass to Isabelle Udovc, who slid the ball past the SFU keeper, who could only get a piece of it.
- The Red Flash were awarded a penalty kick in the 24', but the Knights were glad to see it missed off the post and cleared away to safety.
- Despite the 1-0 lead at the half, the Knights dominated the run of play and outshot the Red Flash 9-2.
- FDU got the much-desired second goal in the 54' thanks to the boot of Aitana Martínez-Montoya, fed through on a nice pass from Gina Steiner.
- Steiner would get a goal of her own as Martínez-Montoya flicked a ball into the path of Steiner, who finished with the goal.
- The Knights saw out the remainder of the match and left with the decisive 3-0 victory.
Inside the Box Score
- The Knights logged their most shots in any game of the season with 22, 12 of which were directed on target.
- 13 different Knights put a shot in the direction of the Red Flash's net, leading the way were Isabelle Udovc with five, and Aitana Martínez-Montoya with four.
- Martínez-Montoya's goal gives her two on the season, and her multi-point day is the second one this season from a Knights freshman (Helena Lehr, 8/29/21 at Fordham). She continues to hold firm as the Knights leader in shots and shots on target.
- Malene Nielsen had little to do, but she logged her fifth clean sheet in just nine collegiate matches. She made one save.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"I felt we played a strong game. We talked at halftime how we felt we were completely dominant in the first half, but we talked about one chance and the game could've been tied."
"We were just more decisive going forward. On the first goal, Naemi [Hausen] had the chance to go back, and she didn't, and we're talking to the team and sometimes 2v4, 2v5, isn't bad because they're not organized. Izzy [Udovc] made a great run behind, Naemi made a great run forward, and we found a seam and it's a goal. That's one thing we talk about, we can't look away chances and in transition, and we didn't today, and I think that's a good step forward."
What's Next
The Knights stay in Teaneck for their next NEC conference match, a date with Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, September 25, at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
