CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The Knights defeated the Georgetown Hoyas in a five-set match in Charlottesville on Friday morning on the first day of the University of Virginia Tournament.

Fueling the Knights was sophomore Madisyn Beirne who dished out a career-high 18 kills, 11 digs and two service aces for 20.5 points.

Senior Sophia Spiridonakos topped her career-high as well, with 16 kills and two blocks for 17 points.

Anchoring the Knights on defense was senior Allegra Rivas who recorded a season-high 28 digs.
How it Happened

Set one started in a tight battle, with the two teams trading points to 18. Georgetown closed the set on a 7-1 run, dropping the Knights 25-18.

FDU took control early in the second set with a 12-7 hold. Georgetown worked to close the gap, depositing a series of kills by freshman setter Mary Grace Goyena to knot the score at 19. Spiridonakos and Fisk put up a fight at the net to secure a final block and top the Hoyas 25-23.

Georgetown caught momentum early in set three but could not sustain it. With the Hoyas at a five-point advantage, Beirne put up six kills to jolt the Knights into the lead, closing the set 26-24.

Set four started in another back-and-forth affair. A five-point run by the Hoyas forced a gap that the Knights could not close. Georgetown survived the set 25-17.

Following a five-point run by the Knights, the final set shifted into a tight contest. With a four-kill streak, FDU took the set and defeated the Hoyas.

The Knights will take to the court for the second time today at 4:30 p.m. to face the Bellarmine Knights in Charlottesville on the first day of the University of Virginia Tournament.
