Knights Outlook
The Knights kicked off their campaign last weekend in a home opener packed with highs and lows. FDU picked up a pair of wins, including a sweep of Manhattan, and a straight-set loss at the Rothman Center
Senior Allegra Rivas secured the NEC's Defensive Player of the Week honor after leading FDU in digs in all three matches and recording over 5.6 digs per set. The Aledo, Texas native fueled the Knights through several tight sets, leading the team to victory against Maryland Eastern Shore with 25 digs.
Other top performers for the Knights include Sophomore Madisyn Beirne, who led the weekend on offense with 34 points, followed by graduate student Miriam Stingl who tallied 26 kills and six blocks for 33.5 points of her own.
Scouting the Competition
The Knights will take on host-school New Hampshire (1-2), Providence (3-1) and Siena (0-3). This will be the Knight's first time competing in the Holly Young Invitational, and their second time facing off with New Hampshire and Siena in program history.
New Hampshire is led by third-year head coach Christopher Feliciano. The Wildcats went 1-2 at the Mercer tournament this past weekend, with a victory over Stetson and losses to Murray State and Mercer. New Hampshire was selected to finish second in the America East conference and returns two all-conference honorees from last season, senior middle blocker Abby Sullivan and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Serbousek.
Providence is led by 20-year head coach Margot Royer-Johnson. The Friars went 2-1 at the Army Invitational, with victories over NEC-competitor Merrimack and Iona, and a loss to the hosts. They also defeated Rhode Island, putting a 3-1 mark on the season. Graduate student Allison Barber was named to the Preseason All-Big East and the Friars were selected to finish eighth in their conference.
Siena is helmed by fourth-year head coach Vilis Ozols. The Saints took part in last weekend's 'Rumble in the Rockies' where they were defeated twice by host Wyoming as well as by Saint Mary's. Siena returned nine letter winners from their 2020-21 season.
From Coach France
"This weekend I'm hopeful that our knights will carry on our play from last weekend in our season-opening tournament. As we move forward in the 2021 season, the ability to approve week-by-week is something that the team is striving towards."
Next Up
After traveling to New Hampshire, the Knights are back on the road to Providence, R.I. where they will meet the Friars once again for the Friar Classic. Other teams set to compete are Binghamton and Saint Peter's.
