PHILADELPHIA, PA. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (0-2-1) battled the Saint Joseph's Hawks (0-2-1) to a 0-0 draw on Thursday evening at Sweeney Field.
How it Happened
- Gina Steiner had the Knights first opportunity on target in the 18', but her header off a Madelyn Robbins free kick could only find the keeper's mitts.
- Clear opportunities were far and few between in the first half for either side, as defense was the name of the game.
- Kiomy Luperon, who troubled Saint Joseph's with her pace on the wing, nearly broke the deadlock in the 71' with a great run and a blazing shot, but it was just over the bar.
- The Knights were able to consistently create chances, especially late in the match as the game stretched from end-to-end, but neither side could score in regulation, and we saw the first contest taken to overtime this season.
- The match would ultimately end at 0-0, with neither side able to get the 'golden goal' of overtime.
Inside the Box Score
- Aitana Martínez-Montoya has continued her hot start on the banks of the Hackensack with her third consecutive multi-shot game. Gina Steiner and Alexiane Marquis also logged multiple shots.
- FDU were up to the defensive set piece task early, as they faced seven corners in the first half and were able to repel all seven away with authority.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"The biggest thing is that we found a way to get a result despite being a little shorthanded, despite the heat, and we just found a way to battle throughout the game. I think we had some opportunities to win today, and I think if we were a little better on the ball that would've helped."
"The freshmen got minutes in a game that could have been won or lost on just one play, and those minutes are so valuable. We were really pleased with the players that went in, we were happy with how they stepped on the field, and without a doubt that will be a good step forward for us."
What's Next
The Knights remain road warriors to start the season as they set up for a showdown in the Bronx on Sunday, August 29 against Fordham at Jack Coffey Field. The match starts at 12 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
