SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (0-2-0) fought hard but came up just short against Syracuse (1-0-0) Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium, dropping their match 2-0.
How it Happened
- Malene Nielsen kept Syracuse off the board early with a big save in the 12'.
- Syracuse again came close to scoring in the 28' but could only find the crossbar.
- FDU kept the score level at zeroes heading into the half, but would concede a penalty in the 52', allowing Syracuse to go ahead 1-0.
- Syracuse would add a second goal in the 83', putting them out of reach for the Knights.
Inside the Box Score
- Aitana Martínez-Montoya has started her FDU career off strong with her second consecutive multi-shot game. Her three shots today put her at five on the season.
- Isabelle Udovc led the way in shots on goal for all players with three.
- The freshmen Knights continue to impress on the pitch as all four rookies that earned a start today (Martínez-Montoya, Malene Nielsen, Briana Esteves, and Leighann Kafel) played the full 90 minutes.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"We absolutely competed in this match. I think we held our composure early, we had a great chance to score, it was a better performance. We just have to work on the little pieces of the game better."
"We had some great looks -- if Monty (Martínez-Montoya) doesn't get taken down outside the box she scores -- and it's tied 1-1 with less than ten minutes left. As the game went on, I felt we were playing better. Even though we had two against us in the second half, I thought we were more in control of the game in the second half than we were in the first half, so I think that's a positive thing.
What's Next
The Knights head to Philadelphia on Thursday, August 26, where they will do battle with Saint Joseph's at Sweeney Field with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. live on ESPN+.
