Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 25 Rutgers in Season Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (0-1-0) opened the 2021-22 season with a 6-0 loss to No. 25 Rutgers (1-0-0) Thursday night at Yurcak Field.

How it Happened

  • Rutgers opened the scoring in the 4'.

  • The Scarlet Knights would tack on two more before the 20', and ultimately added a fourth goal just before halftime.

  • FDU would respond well to an early second-half goal with a strong effort from outside the box by Aitana Martínez-Montoya in the 50'.

  • The home side would add a pair of goals in the second half, finishing with six.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Burgundy and Blue saw nine freshmen make their collegiate debuts, including three earning starting nods, Malene Nielsen, Leighann Kafel and Aitana Martínez-Montoya.

  • In her collegiate debut, Nielsen reacted strongly and made eight saves.

Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"Because the game got away from us, we were able to play a good amount of freshmen and get them minute in against a quality opponent. I thought we did have some of the new players come in and really do well."

"We're hoping to take our game against Syracuse and improve upon what we did today. We can't play passive, we've gotta play more aggressive, we've gotta compete."

What's Next

The Knights take on Syracuse at SU Soccer Stadium in Syracuse on Sunday, August 22, at 12 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra ($).
