Baseball Outlasts Wagner 6-5 to Take Series

TEANECK, NJ - In only his second start of the season, junior Brendan Medoro turned in a great pitching performance to propel FDU through seven innings. The Knights (8-23, 7-17) needed a crucial RBI base hit in the top of the 9th inning by freshman Hunter D'Amato to break a tie and hold off Wagner (9-21, 6-18) 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened:

1st Inning:
  • FDU started off the game with a Mike Veit walk
  • Justin Sierra had a single that was misplayed and allowed Veit to advance to third and Sierra to reach second
  • James Donlon produced the first RBI of the game with a groundout that allowed Veit to score
  • In the bottom half of the first Wagner responded with a single and then a double which tied the game at one
3rd  Inning:
  • The Seahawks broke the tie by loading the bases with a walk and then two bunt singles
  • Wagner's Jared Gillen produced another RBI this series with a sacrifice fly to center field
5th Inning:
  • FDU retook the lead as they took advantage of several fielding miscues by the Seahawks defense
  • David Bordieri Jr. began the rally with a leadoff walk
  • Michael Gruber laid down a bunt to advance Bordieri Jr. and the catcher bobbled the ball allowing Gruber to reach safely
  • TJ Werner singled through the left side loading the bases
  • Hunter D'Amato hit a sharp ground ball off the glove of the third baseman which scored Bordieri Jr. and Gruber, giving the Knights a 3-2 edge
 8th Inning:
  • The Knights extended their lead and made Wagner pay for several defensive errors
  • D'Amato began the rally with a sharp single to left field
  • Then Donlon hit a hard ground ball to the first baseman who had the ball bounce off his glove and was unable to get an out
  • Levinson then got another RBI in the series as a line drive up the middle deflected off the pitcher and then through the legs of the second baseman to make the score 4-2
  • Back-to-back walks to Tommy Verga and Bordieri Jr. pushed across the fifth run for FDU
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Wagner responded
  • A one-out single ended the day for Medoro
  • The Seahawks ripped off consecutive doubles cutting the FDU lead to a run
  • With a runner on third, the home plate umpire called a balk on reliever Tristan Plescia, bringing home the runner from third and tying the game
9th Inning:
  • It would be another error by Wagner that would help the Knights generate a run and another lead
  • Werner grounded to the shortstop who overthrew the first baseman allowing Werner to reach safely
  • Veit sacrificed Werner over to second giving way to D'Amato
  • D'Amato lined a single to left field driving in Werner and the go-ahead run for the Knights
