Baseball Wins in Pitcher's Duel Against Wagner

TEANECK, N.J. – Freshman Tommy Verga delivered a clutch two RBI two-out double to give FDU (7-22, 6-16) the lead in the 9th inning on Friday against Wagner (8-20, 5-17). It was the starting pitchers of both teams that dominated the game until the 9th inning when FDU broke through with two runs.
 
How it Happened:
 
2nd Inning:
  • Wagner took the first lead with a solo home run beyond the center field fence by Freddy Sabido
4th Inning
  • The Burgundy and Blue started the rally with freshman Hunter D'Amato leading off with a base hit into left field
  • Head coach Rob DiToma called for a hit and run during Mike Veit's plate appearance, which led to D'Amato reaching third on a groundout by Veit
  • James Donlon then drove in D'Amato with a groundout RBI to tie the score
5th Inning
  • Wagner retook the lead with the second solo home run of the game beyond the center field fence
6th Inning:
  • The Knights had several brilliant defensive plays on the afternoon starting with a Justin Sierra diving catch that kept the Knights within a run
8th Inning:
  • TJ Werner displayed his fielding prowess at shortstop with a leaping grab on a line drive that had potential to drive in a run
9th Inning
  • FDU began the two-out rally with a single by Donlon
  • Senior Brad Levinson walked
  • Verga, on the first pitch, drove the ball down the left field line delivering the tying and winning runs for FDU and a 3-2 lead
  • Junior Brendan Medoro came in the bottom half of the inning to get the final three outs

Inside the Box Score:
  • Junior Joey Kosowsky went 7.1 innings allowing on two runs on seven hits and struck out seven
  • Freshman Jude Baxt came on in relief in the 8th inning and earned the win for the Knights, his second of the season
  • Medoro earned his fifth save of the season
  • Wagner starting pitcher Ryan Lauk went 8 innings, surrendering only one run on three hits while striking out 12
