Knights Drop Two Matches at LIU on Tuesday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team opened NEC action with a pair of losses at LIU (4-0, 4-0 NEC) on Tuesday, falling in straight sets in the first match before taking one set in the second match at Steinberg Wellness Center.

Match 2: LIU 3, FDU 1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-20)

Match 1: LIU 3, FDU 0
Sophomore Mujay Mambu paced the Knights in the first match of the day with 11 kills and just one attack error, registering a .417 attack percentage but the Knights were held to a .223 attack percentage as a team. Senior Victoria Demmene added nine kills, while junior Brooke Stevens finished with five for the Knights.
 
The Sharks racked up 11 service aces in the win, including three from their setter Ainsley Malis. Karolina Nova and Jovana Stekovic led the charge for the home team with 15 and 12 kills, respectively.
 
Match 2: LIU 3, FDU 1
The Knights erased a pair of four-point deficits in the opening set. Trailing 23-22, a kill by Demmene tied the set before senior McKenna Setterlund aced the Sharks and gave the Knights a 1-0 match lead.
 
The second set was equally contested as the Knights held a 21-19 lead after a kill by Demmene. With the Burgundy and Blue on top 23-21, the Sharks took control scoring the final four points to even the match at 1-1.
 
The Knights rebounded and held a 13-12 edge in the third frame after a kill by sophomore Tessa Fisk before the Sharks turned the tables with seven straight points including a pair of aces by Anastasia Scott.
 
With the 2-1 lead in hand, the Sharks led for the duration of the final frame, including a 22-12 lead before sealing the win.
 
Demmene totaled 14 kills and 15 digs in the second match, while freshman Madisyn Beirne logged a career-high 11 kills. Setterlund dished out 33 assists to go along with 14 digs and senior libero Allison Koester totaled 20 digs.

The Knights travel to North Andover, Mass. for two matches against Merrimack on Friday, March 12.
