Scouting the Seahawks
Wagner (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NEC) will play their second match of the year against FDU on Tuesday night. The Seahawks went 5-10-3 in 2019 and were 3-4-3 in NEC play. Scouting the Knights
FDU (1-1-0, 1-0-0 NEC) opened NEC play last Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart. Junior Madeline Robbins netted the game-winning goal in the 40th minute off a nice feed from fellow junior
Isabelle Udovc. Senior goalie
Cassandra Marcoux registered her first shutout and tallied a career-high 11 saves in the win. Marcoux was selected as the NEC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against the Pioneers. FDU was selected to finish second in the NEC Preseason Poll after a 2019 season in which the Burgundy and Blue reached the NEC Championship Game, which marked the Knights seventh consecutive NEC Tournament appearance. In last season's match against Wagner, juniors
Lea Egner recorded a team-high five shots and the defense held the Seahawks to one of the Knights eight shutouts for the season. FDU returns has four of the top five point scorers from last year, including senior
Alexiane Marquis who lead the team with 16 points. Egner who also reached double-digits with 11 points will be back for FDU. Marcoux has 18 saves to this point in the season. Sophomore
Cayla Waterman has the Knights other goal this season against Hofstra.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"I think we're still finding our game right now, but I felt we had some good counter attacks in the first half and we stayed tight in the second half which allowed us to overcome not holding enough possession," stated head coach
Eric Teepe after the victory. "We know Sacred Heart is a top team, so it was good to get that game out of the way and to win our first game in the conference, especially when you don't have a lot of time beforehand is a good sign for us."
When asked about Robbins' goal, Teepe said, "We know we can be very good in the attacking part of the game and that was one of few times where we had a nice combination and Maddie converted a great chance. She could have had three goals tonight, but the keeper made a couple of great saves."
When asked about Marcoux's 11 save performance, Teepe stated, "Cass is such a hard worker and I think she wanted to prove to the team so much that she's the number one goalie and I think she came back with a tremendous game tonight. She had a couple of big saves, she was strong off the line, and was in control of the back line. It was a good bounce back game and shows what she can do."
What's Next
After Tuesday's match vs. against Wagner, the Knights will return home for a match against St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 16 at 5:00 p.m. from University Stadium.
