Precise Pitching Leads Knights Past Wagner on Saturday

TEANECK, N.J. – Led by a stellar pitching performance from junior right-handers Joey Kosowsky and Brendan Medoro, the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team defeated Wagner 7-3 at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Kosowsky (1-0) started for the Knights (2-5, 1-1 NEC) and racked up 10 strikeouts across five innings of work, limiting the hot-hitting Seahawks (3-4, 1-1 NEC) to three runs on six hits before handing the ball to Medoro, who was equally impressive. Medoro earned the save by holding the Seahawks scoreless over the final four frames on just two hits.

Offensively, Tom Ruscitti and Mike Veit supplied the firepower for the Burgundy and Blue by each delivering a two-run home run in the victory.

How it Happened
  • After a pair of scoreless innings, freshman infielder TJ Werner kickstarted the third for the Knights with a basehit.
  • The next man up was Ruscitti, who entered the at bat seeking his first hit of the young season. Facing an 0-2 hole, the Knights' catcher launched an absolute blast, which landed well-beyond the right field fence and gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.
  • Kosowsky had struck out five of six Seahawks before the visitors answered back.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Seahawks took the lead with three runs, highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by Jared Gillen.
  • Trailing by one in the fifth, the Knights' bats went back to work as Jake Ellowitz led off with a single and Werner followed with a double.
  • After a pitching change and an intentional walk to Ruscitti, sophomore outfielder Justin Sierra tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Knights took the lead on a fielding error before Veit stepped up and delivered his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right, which gave the Knights the 7-3 lead.
  • Medoro came on for Kosowsky in the sixth and proceeded to silence the Seahawks over the final four frames.
Inside the Box Score
  • Kosowsky's 10 punchouts are the most by a Knight since Logan Frati totaled 12 back in 2016.
  • Ruscitti's home run was the 20th of his career as he finished 1-for-1 at the dish with three walks.
  • Freshman infielder Hunter D'Amato extended his hitting streak to five games with a 1-for-4 day.
  • Werner topped the Knights' offense with three hits and scored twice.
  • The victory was head coach Rob DiToma's first in NEC play as the Knights' season was cut short prior to conference action last season.
