Baseball's Rally Comes Up Short in Sunday's Rubber Game

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team had their chances in the final two innings but were unable to take down Wagner in the rubber game of the series, falling 6-4 at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing by two, the Knights (2-6, 1-2 NEC) loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to find the game-tying hit as Wagner (4-4, 2-1 NEC) reliever Kevin Wiseman shut the door for his third save of the season.

Senior outfielder Brad Levinson led the way with a 2-for-4 effort, while James Donlon and Hunter D'Amato hit back-to-back homers in the contest.

Freshman right-hander Jude Baxt provided the Knights with 5.2 quality innings of relief, holding the Seahawks to one run on four hits.

How it Happened
  • The Seahawks got on the board right out of the gate with a pair of doubles leading to two runs, one earned, off of FDU starter Aaron Cohn. A heady double play where Levinson fired a strike from left field to second base to double-off the runner helped Cohn escape.
  • In the top of the second, the Seahawks extended their lead to five with a two-run double from leadoff man Dimaggio Cazares highlighting the outburst.
  • The Seahawks appeared poised to add another run in the third but the first of two outstanding relay throws in the game by the Knights' second baseman D'Amato cut down the run at the plate.
  • In the fourth, outfielder Mike Veit scored the Knights' first run after drawing a walk and eventually stealing third base before crossing the plate on a fielder's choice.
  • Baxt entered the game in the third and matched Wagner pitching as the game proceeded to the seventh with the visitors still leading 5-1.
  • A two-out single by Jared Gillen extended the Seahawks' lead to five, 6-1, but the Knights would counter in the bottom of the seventh.
  • With one man on, Donlon – facing a full count – clobbered his second home run of the season, a two-run blast over the right field fence.
  • The next Knight up was D'Amato and he sent the second pitch of his at bat over the right-center field fence for his first career blast and made it a 6-4 game.
  • A Levinson double sandwiched a pair of walks in the eighth for the Knights but the aforementioned Wiseman got the strikeout that he needed.
  • In the ninth, Donlon drew a leadoff walk before Veit and Tommy Verga each earned a one-out walk.
  • With the bases loaded, Wiseman buckled down and struck out the next two Knights to end the game.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Knights drew 12 walks in the loss, their most in a game since they netted 17 in a wild 35-24 affair against Coppin State in 2016.
  • The freshman Verga earned four walks in five at bats.
  • D'Amato's home run extended his hitting streak to six games.
  • In addition to his team-leading two home runs, Donlon tops the Knights with seven RBI this season.
  • With his stolen base today, Tom Ruscitti improved to 5-for-5 in thefts this season.
  • Jared Gillen led the Seahawks with a 3-for-5 effort, while Nick Zuppe (2-0) pitched three innings of relief to net the win.
