Baseball Drops NEC Opener to Wagner

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its 2021 NEC opener 17-3 to Wagner at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Friday.
 
The Knights (1-5, 0-1 NEC) led 2-1 after two but were unable to slow the hot-hitting Seahawks (3-3, 1-0 NEC), who totaled 19 hits on the day.
 
Freshman infielder Hunter D'Amato paced the Knights with a 2-for-4 effort, which extended his hitting streak to four games.
 
How it Happened
  • FDU right-hander James Donlon started and pitched around a pair of singles to escape the first inning unscathed.
  • After the Knights went quietly in the bottom of the inning, the Seahawks broke into the scoring column in the second with a run on two hits.
  • Aided by some defensive miscues from the Seahawks, the Knights managed to score two runs in the home half of the second without a hit.
  • Junior Tom Ruscitti reached on an error and entered scoring position by stealing second, after a walk a throwing error scored the first run before Mike Veit knocked in the second with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Seahhawks immediately tied the game in the third after an error allowed a man to reach before Tyler Sanfilippo delivered an RBI double.
  • Still tied at two in the fourth, the Seahawks exploded for six runs on three hits including a two-run single by AJ Medrano.
  • Leading 9-2 in the sixth, the visitors would tack on four more runs on three hits and pulled away with the win.  
Inside the Box Score
  • Donlon pitched the first two innings allowing a run on four hits.
  • Ryan Lauk (1-2) earned the win for the Seahawks by throwing seven frames and holding the Knights to a pair of unearned runs, while striking out eight.
  • Senior right-hander Tristan Plescia retired all three Seahawks in the ninth.
  • Sophomore infielder David Bordieri Jr. entered the game in the sixth inning and delivered an RBI double to left field in his lone at bat.
  • Medrano led the surge for the Seahawks with a 3-for-5 effort including four RBI.
