Baseball Wins Dramatic 16-Inning Game at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. –  The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team earned a 4-2 victory over Fordham in 16 innings on Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Park. Sophmore outfielder Justin Sierra delivered the heroics for the Knights' first win of the season by driving a two-out triple down the right field line in the 16th.

Sierra finished 1-for-4 in the contest with the two clutch RBI, while James Donlon paced the Knights with a 3-for-6 effort. Freshman Jude Baxt (1-0) earned the victory by pitching two scoreless innings and limiting the Rams to just one hit, while striking out a pair.

Coach DiToma's Thoughts
"This was a total team effort from start to finish. We have been facing some great pitching since opening day but our offense has refused to give up and came up clutch today. The grit that our pitchers showed today was incredible. There were many times in this game that it would have been easy to give in but we just kept playing and fighting as if the scoreboard didn't matter."

How it Happened
  • Donlon started for the Knights and tossed 3.2 innings and held the hosts to one earned run and two hits, while striking out three.
  • The Rams scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the fourth and netted their second run on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 in the sixth.
  • The Knights responded in the seventh inning when freshman TJ Werner came through with a two-run single, which plated Jake Ellowitz and Tommy Verga and knotted the game at two.
  • With both teams receiving quality pitching efforts, the game remained deadlocked until the 16th.
  • After the first two Knights were retired, Donlon and Verga each singled, which set the table for Sierra.
  • On the second pitch of his at bat, Sierra delivered the go-ahead runs with his first-career triple.
  • Baxt permitted a one-out walk but set down the next two Rams in order, including a game-ending strikeout.
Inside the Box Score
  • The 16 innings are the most the Knights have played since they defeated Wagner 13-12 in 16 back on April 7, 2013.
  • Verga notched his first career two-hit game and scored twice in the win.
  • Sierra and Werner each supplied the run-scoring knocks.
  • DiToma earns his first win in his second game against his old team. The Knights' leader spent six seasons as an assistant coach on the staff at Fordham.
  • Ellowitz, Hunter D'Amato and Mike Veit each registered one hit on the day.
  • In addition to Donlon and Baxt, three Knights provided scoreless relief with Marc Bisogno going four innings, Brendan Medoro 3.2 frames and Ethan Rembish 2.2.
  • Like his head coach, Bisogno was also facing his former team for the first time this weekend as he transferred to FDU following an undergraduate career with the Rams.
