BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was unable to hold off Fordham on Sunday, dropping the rubber game of the three-game series 6-2 at Houlihan Park.
On an extremely windy afternoon in the Bronx, the Knights led 2-1 after six innings but the Rams (7-1) fought back to tie the game in the seventh before taking the lead in the eighth.
Junior right-hander
Joey Kosowsky started for the Knights and went the first four innings allowing one run on three hits, while striking out three before senior
Aaron Cohn provided the Knights three innings of one-run ball with four punch-outs.
Mike Veit and freshman
Hunter D'Amato paced the FDU (1-3) offense with two hits apiece in the loss.
How it Happened
- With the Knights trailing 1-0 in the third, Veit sent a single up the middle, which was corralled by the Fordham second baseman however, aggressive baserunning allowed Michael Gruber to score from second base on the infield single and tie the game.
- The Rams threatened in the fourth but a heads-up defensive play by Gruber ended the inning. The Knights' catcher caught a pop-up bunt and doubled off the runner at first base for an inning-ending double play.
- In the top of the sixth, a bunt single by D'Amato followed by an error put the Knights in position to score.
- James Donlon was able to score D'Amato from third with a bunt of his own, which put the Knights on top 2-1.
- After Cohn stranded a runner at second in the bottom of the inning, the Rams fought back in the seventh. A one-out double followed by a walk set the table for Fordham's Jake Guercio, who singled through the right side to tie the game before the Knights successfully nabbed the potential go-ahead run at the plate.
- A pair of RBI singles followed by a two-run single by Guercio broke the game open for the Rams in the eighth.
- Veit singled in the ninth but the Knights were unable to threaten as Alex Henderson nailed down the win for the Rams.
