Baseball Falls in Game One of Three-Game Series at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was unable to break through against Fordham on Friday, falling 9-0 at Houlihan Field in the first of three games this weekend between the teams.

Mike Veit registered the Knights' (0-2) lone knock of the day, a two-out double in the seventh inning and added two walks to his ledger in the loss.

The unbeaten Rams (5-0) received five shutout innings from left-hander Matt Mikulski (2-0), who permitted six walks but struck out seven Knights and did not allow a hit. Declan Lavelle came on in relief, pitching four frames to earn the save for the home team.

How It Happened
  • Mikulski kept the Knights off-balance from the outset after allowing a leadoff walk to Veit, he retired the next three batters in order.
  • Senior right-hander Chris Quijano started for the Burgundy and Blue and kept the Rams off the board in the first before running into trouble in the second inning.
  • A leadoff single and a hit by pitch set the table for the Rams before an infield single loaded the bases. Two runs scored on an error before a two-run single gave the Rams a 4-0 lead after two.
  • Freshman shortstop Hunter D'Amato led off the third for the Knights with a walk and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Veit. Tom Ruscitti followed with a walk but Mikulski retired the next two Knights to escape the threat.
  • Senior right-hander Austin Crebs came on in relief of Quijano in the third and allowed a pair of unearned runs.
  • Crebs would settle in and retired the next six batters he faced before the Rams tacked on one on an RBI single by Colton Snelling in the sixth.
  • A two-run single in the eighth off of freshman right-hander Cole Coolbaugh concluded the scoring.
Inside the Box Score
  • In addition to Veit, D'Amato also drew two free passes in the game as Fordham pitching issued six on the day.
  • Crebs pitched four innings allowing three runs (one earned), with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Quijano went two innings, permitted three hits and allowed four unearned runs, while also notching two stikeouts.
  • Jack Harnisch paced the Fordham offense with three hits, while Jake Guercio knocked in two runs.
  • Second-year Knights head coach Rob DiToma was facing his former team for the first time following six seasons on the staff at Fordham.
