BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The
Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped its 2021 season opener 12-0 at LIU on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior outfielder Mike
Veit went 1-for-3 with a walk in the loss, while Tommy
Verga finished 1-for-4 in his collegiate debut.
EJ
Exposito led the charge for the Sharks (1-0) by hitting a pair of home runs in a 4-for-5, six RBI effort.
How it Happened
- Verga notched the Knights' first hit of the season by lining a two-out single to left field but he was stranded at first.
- Senior right-hander Aaron Cohn came on in relief of starter Joey Kosowsky in the third and allowed a double and a walk with two outs. The runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Cohn escaped the jam by inducing a groundout to shortstop.
- The Sharks manufactured the game's first run in the fourth. A walk and a bloop single set the table before back-to-back flyouts, including a sacrifice fly by Colin Adams advanced the runner home and gave the Sharks the 1-0 edge.
- Exposito extended the lead for the Sharks with a solo blast in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh.
- The Sharks led 4-0 after seven but tacked on eight runs in the eighth, highlighted by a grand slam from Exposito.
