Women's Basketball Drops Road Battle at St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Three players scored in double-digits, but the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team (9-7, 5-6 NEC) fell 67-60 to St. Francis Brooklyn (3-8, 3-8 NEC) on Tuesday afternoon from the Daniel Lynch '38 Gymnasium.

Senior Madison Stanley led FDU with 19 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The senior shot 9-16 from the floor and now has scored 10 or more points in nine straight games. Junior Lindsey Mack also scored in double-figures with 14 points and connected on four three-pointers in the game. Mack reached 100 career three-pointers in the second quarter and now has 103 for her career, which ranks 10th all-time. Sophomore Maria Roters scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"Credit St. Francis, they came out to start the second half sharp and made all the right plays on both ends of the court and we didn't," said coach Szumilo following the loss. "We let their top three scorers get whatever they wanted. When you combine that with us turning the ball over 25 times, that is never a good recipe for success."

"For tomorrow's game, we will have to take care of the ball much better and make better decisions on both ends of the court."

How it Happened
  • FDU opened the game 7-8 from the floor and took an early 16-7 lead with 5:29 left in the first that was sparked by four quick points from Stanley, three-pointers from freshman Devyn Scott and Mack, and layups from junior Madeline Selvaggi, sophomore Maria Roters, and freshman Chloe Wilson.
  • Sophomore Celia Carbonell picked up where she left off after netting a career-high 16 points against LIU by connecting on a three off a pass from Selvaggi and sophomore Sierra DeAngelo also made a triple as FDU led 22-11 after one quarter of play.
  • Both defenses controlled the pace early in the second quarter as there was only a combined seven points scored in the first 5:30 minutes of the period as FDU held a 26-14 advantage, but the Terriers cut it to as close as nine points before Mack connected on her 100th career three-pointer to help push the lead back to double-digits and a 33-23 lead at the half.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 33-33 led by five points from senior Ally Lassen with 6:40 to go in the third before Stanley ended the run and gave FDU the lead back.
  • The FDU lead was short-lived as the Terriers scored the next nine points, with five coming from sophomore Nevena Dimitrijevic pushed the lead to 42-35, but Stanley responded by scoring or assisting on FDU's final seven points with a pair of layups and an assist on Mack's third three of the game as FDU cut the deficit to 48-42 after three stanzas.
  • Stanley and Roters combined to score the first four points of the fourth to get FDU back within two points, but St. Francis Brooklyn scored eight of the next 10 points to give the Terriers a 56-48 advantage with 4:22 remaining.
  • Over the final 4:22, the teams traded baskets before Roters connected on a layup off an offensive rebound with 0:42 remaining to get within five points and Stanley hit a three-pointer from the wing to get within four points with 0:17 remaining, but the Terriers held on for a 67-60 win.
