Five Score in Double-Figures to Guide FDU to Thrilling 79-74 Overtime Victory

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Sophomore Maria Roters was the hero in overtime as she scored nine of her 13 points and was one of five FDU players to score in double-figures as the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team (10-7, 6-6 NEC) recorded an exciting 79-74 overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn (3-8, 3-8 NEC) on Wednesday afternoon from the Daniel Lynch '38 Gymnasium. The overtime win was FDU's first overtime win since 2018 when they beat Bryant 77-69 in overtime.

Freshman Devyn Scott netted a career-high 18 points on 8-14 shooting in 31 minutes of action off the bench. Junior Lindsey Mack scored 15 points and made five shots, including four three-pointers. Roters scored seven unanswered points in overtime and nine in the OT to go along with her 13 points and seven rebounds for the game. Senior Madison Stanley and sophomore Celia Carbonell each scored 11 points in the contest and each were 4-8 from the field.

Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"I am very happy for our team to bounce back from yesterday's loss," stated coach Szumilo following the overtime win. "I thought we showed a lot of toughness and perseverance today especially in the overtime without Madison. Maria stepped up huge in those five minutes. That is what she is capable of every game."

"I thought Lindsey, Celia, and Devyn stepped up in ways we needed them to which was to be more aggressive on offense."

How it Happened
  • Stanley, FDU's season-leading scorer opened the game with six of the team's first eight points with a pair of layups and a jumper, but the St. Francis Brooklyn held a 13-8 advantage with 4:46 to go in the frame before FDU ended the quarter on a mini 8-5 run sparked by a three-pointer from Carbonell as St. Francis Brooklyn led 18-16 after one quarter.
  • Carbonell scored FDU's first six points of the second and gave FDU its first lead of the game at 22-19 with 6:40 to go in the second before Scott netted the teams next six points as FDU still held a three-point lead with 1:53 before half.
  • After St. Francis Brooklyn sophomore Nevena Dimitrijevic got the Terriers as close as two points from the lead, Mack connected on a three-pointer to push the lead to five before Terrier freshman Fruzsina Horvath got them back to within two points, but junior Madeline Selvaggi found Carbonell on a backdoor layup as FDU took a 35-31 lead into the half.
  • Both defenses set the tone early in the second half in which there were six lead changes over the first 4:31 of the third quarter and FDU took a 44-40 lead on a Mack three-pointer, but the Terriers quickly regained the lead with five unanswered points with 3:07 left in the quarter before Scott took over during the final 2:02 of the third as she added five points to her career night as FDU and St. Francis Brooklyn were tied at 49-49 entering the fourth quarter.
