Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall was selected to finish fifth in the 2021-22 BIG EAST preseason coaches poll. The Pirates return four of their top six scorers from last season, add three crucial transfers and welcome a top-ranked recruiting class to South Orange. Sophomore guard
Kadary Richmond comes to The Hall from Syracuse where he appeared in all 28 games and averaged 21 minutes a game as a true freshman. SHU also returns graduate student Myles Cale, a 6'6 graduate student who started all 27 games for the Pirates and set a career high in scoring with 11.6 points per game in 2020-21. Down the bench, three members of the Hall coaching staff have ties to
Greg Herenda and Knights with Pirates' associate head coach Grant Billmeier serving as an assistant coach for Herenda in 2014-15 and new Hall assistant coach Donald Copeland coming to South Orange from Wagner where he saw the Knights twice a season from 2017-21.

Scouting the Knights
FDU looks to start the season off on the right note with Wednesday's matchup at The Rock. FDU is all-time 1-1 at Prudential Center, winning their first game at the arena in 2013 against Seton Hall by a 58-54 tally in Herenda's inaugural season. The Knights welcome in nine new student-athletes, including eight freshman, who fill out a squad that lost seven after the 2020-21 season. Picked to finish ninth in the Northeast Conference, Herenda's Burgundy and Blue side seeks to find their way back into the Northeast Conference Tournament having last earned a spot in the eight-team postseason tourney in the 2019-20 season, falling to LIU in the quarterfinal. The Knights were in the hunt last season notching big NEC wins against Central Connecticut and Saint Francis U (Pa.) [OT]. The Knights swept the season series with Bryant ant LIU, playing on back-to-back days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the Knights to watch on Wednesday is junior
Brandon Rush who put up a team-high 27 points in 23 minutes of work in the preseason exhibition against Rutgers-Newark earlier this month. Rush went 9-9 from the field, including 7-7 from behind the arch. Also of note, junior
Devon Dunn makes his return to the hardwood in Hackensack as the recently-named co-captain opted out of the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 concerns. Eight of the Knights' newcomers saw playing time in the exhibition.

Coach Herenda's Thoughts
"Playing Seton Hall is just a great natural intrastate game that we are very appreciative of. We have so many people in common that it makes the game exciting and familiar in the same breath. They have great size, length and athleticism. We will have our hands full. We need to step up to this challenge right out of the gate. I am excited to see how our team responds playing against a very good team in a BIG EAST arena."
