Women’s Soccer Topples Sacred Heart, 5-3, in Wild NEC Tournament Affair

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (10-5-4, 6-2-2 NEC) took down the Sacred Heart Pioneers (8-7-2, 6-3-1)

How it Happened

  • The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 8', but the Knights would find an equalizer in the 16' thanks to Christa Waterman off of a Lea Egner corner.
  • It was déjà vu as Sacred Heart scored in the 24', but the Knights would find another equalizer just six minutes later after Aitana Martínez-Montoya's free kick hit the post but Naemi Hausen followed it into the back of the net.
  • The Knights would claim the lead in the 36' thanks to an absolutely sublime strike from Lea Egner, as the midfielder carried the ball well through the midfield and unleashed a rocket into the back of the net.
  • It would become a 4-2 lead for the Knights shortly before the halftime whistle as Hausen's second goal came thanks to off a Madelyn Robbins corner kick.
  • FDU added a fifth in the 55' through the boot of Briana Esteves and thanks to assists from Hausen and Gina Steiner

Inside the Box Score

  • This victory marks the eighth consecutive season in which the women's soccer team has logged at least four goals in a single match.
  • The match contained the most goals by one team in the NEC Tournament since FDU's seven goals against Saint Francis U (Pa.) in the 2015 NEC Tournament Semifinal.
  • The high-scoring affair was also a banner day for multiple Knights, as Leighann Kafel earned her first career point while Briana Esteves earned her first career goal.
  • Five was the magic number for the Knights as five separate Knights logged at least one assist on the five goals. Aitana Martínez-Montoya tallied two, putting her team-leading points total at 19, and she was joined by Kafel, Madelyn Robbins, Naemi Hausen, and Lea Egner in the category.
  • Hausen, in addition to her assist, logged two goals, leading to a season high point tally of five in the match, and boosting her season point total to 15.

What's Next
The Knights will remain in New Britain for the NEC Tournament Final on Sunday, November 7, at 1 p.m., where they will take on hosts Central Connecticut State. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3 as well as NEC Front Row.
