Women’s Basketball Topples Cornell

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 NEC) earned a statement victory over the Cornell Big Red (2-3, 0-0 Ivy), nearly doubling up their Ivy League opposition's score in a 63-32 victory.

How it Happened

  • The Knights fell behind 5-0 early, but a 13-0 run in the first quarter was all it took for the Knights to take full control of the game the rest of the way.
  • FDU would win the second quarter in emphatic fashion, holding Cornell to just five points in the period and, at one point, going on a 14-2 run over a seven-minute span.
  • The Knights would hold Cornell to just 12 points in the first half, while Devyn Scott led the way with nine points.
  • The third quarter saw more of the same as the Knights went three-for-three from deep, part of a 56.3% night from three, with two from Rachael Niles and one from Celia Carbonell.
  • The fourth quarter was yet another frame in which the Knights held Cornell under ten points, and saw the Knights push the lead to the largest of the entire game (33 points), ultimately winning by a score of 63-32.

Inside the Box Score

  • This emphatic victory from the Knights was also a balanced effort, as nine Knights got on the scoring list. Devyn Scott led the way with 14 points, including going seven-for-eight from the free throw line. Rachael Niles wasn't far behind with 11 points and going three-for-four from three.
  • The forwards for the Knights also made key impacts in their own ways. Chloe Wilson chipped in with nine points for the Knights cause and also finished with five rebounds. Madison Stanley took just two shots, but she led the team with seven rebounds as well as two blocks, giving her seven on the season. Finally, Sierra DeAngelo provided a key spark off the bench, finishing with eight points including a three-pointer and two impressive finishes at the rim.
  • It was a banner day for some of the Knights freshmen, as Abaigeal Babore, Allie McGinn, and Maddisyn Mahoney all made their collegiate debuts, and Babore logged her first career points, sinking three of her four shots from the free throw line.
  • The Knights defense stifled Cornell's offense all game. Cornell could only manage to shoot 19.6% from the field, and finished 2-for-16 (12.5%) from three-point range. In addition, the Knights also managed to double-up Cornell on free throw percentage, shooting 81.8% compared to Cornell's 40% from the line.

Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"What a GREAT TEAM EFFORT! I'm very proud of our team's performance today. Everyone contributed in a major way on both ends. We were locked in defensively and, for the most part, we were able to take Cornell out of what they wanted to do offensively. When you do that and shoot the ball well, the odds are on your side more times than not."

What's Next
The Knights return home for a showdown with NJIT on Wednesday, November 24, at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
