TEANECK, N.J. - FDU baseball alumni and devoted Knights supporter Red McGarry passed away on November 5 at the age of 76 following an extensive illness.
McGarry served as a member of the Knights baseball team from 1965 to 1967, earning a spot on FDU baseball's 1960s All-Decade team. A 2020 recipient of the Dennis O'Brien Alumni Service award, McGarry continued to advocate for the program long after graduation.
"The stories I have heard about Red have been amazing," said FDU Head Baseball Coach Rob DiToma. "We couldn't ask for a better representative of the history of our baseball program. He led a great life and will be missed by all."
His love for baseball extended beyond FDU, setting out to host a trip in July of 2000 that took baseball fanatics to every Major League Baseball stadium in only 36 days. This accomplishment landed McGarry a spot on the Baseball Stadium Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. and an induction into the Tampa Bay Rays Wall of Fame.
McGarry is survived by his wife, Judi, and children Laurie and Michael McGarry. Raised in North Arlington, New Jersey, he is remembered for his passion for baseball and tennis, love for his family, a successful business career and his witty humor.
Throughout his lifetime, McGarry and Judi have championed multiple players through the Knights Adopt-a-Player program, staying in touch with athletes beyond their time at FDU. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests that donations be made in McGarry's name to the FDU Adopt-a-Player program. Donations can be made
