TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team (0-1, 0-0 NEC) fell to the St. John's Red Storm (1-0, 0-0 Big East) by a score of 89-68 in the first game of the season for either side.
How it Happened
- The Knights jumped out to an early 8-6 lead on the strength of a balanced attack, with all four field goals coming from different players.
- The Red Storm would answer with a strong finish to the first quarter, ending it with a 21-13 lead.
- FDU continued to stick around, scoring 24 points in the second quarter and ending the half down 49-37.
- The Knights would get a couple quick buckets to cut the lead to eight in the third quarter, but SJU finished the half on a 14-5 run to put them firmly ahead, ultimately securing the victory
- Despite a couple of important buckets from Dahomée Forgues to keep FDU within striking distance in the fourth quarter, the Big East side would retain their lead and earn the 89-68 victory on their home court.
Inside the Box Score
- It was a career day for Dahomée Forgues, whose 26 points set a new career-high in her first game as a Knight. Forgues finished the game with shooting 9-14 with six made threes.
- Also in double-figures for the Knights was Chloe Wilson, who scored 14 points with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals, along with three assists and a block.
- In the season-opener, eight of the nine Knights who appeared in the game made a field goal.
- As a team, FDU outperformed St. John's from the free throw line, shooting 72.7% to SJU's 63.6% and also earned more steals by a tally of nine to seven.
Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"I think on the offensive end, we're gonna be fine. Obviously, St. John's is a good team, they're big! I think their size definitely bothered us. I thought we showed a lot of good things – we showed fight. I think there's a lot of things we need to improve on, especially on the defensive end, but I think overall, I'm happy with what we able to do."
