TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team (9-5-3, 6-2-1 NEC) clinched their trip to the NEC Tournament as they knocked off Mount St. Mary's (4-13-0, 2-7-0 NEC) in double-overtime, winning 2-1.
How it Happened
- The Knights were unable to score in the first half, but they dominated the run of play and outshot the Mountaineers 7-1.
- The Knights found their breakthrough in the second half thanks to Aitana Martínez-Montoya, whose chipped finish off of a cross from Isabelle Udovc beat the keeper and put the Knights ahead 1-0.
- The Mount would find an equalizer in the 59'.
- Udovc had a chance in the 83' to strike paydirt, but her long-range shot bounced off the crossbar and out of play. The match would remain level at 1-1.
- It was Naemi Hausen who broke the deadlock with just under two minutes remaining in the second half. Her well-taken header off of a cross from Briana Esteves, in a bit of play that was remarkably similar to the first goal scored by the Knights, sent the Knights with all three points and a spot in the NEC Tournament.
Inside the Box Score
- It was a banner day for several individual Knights. Aitana Martínez-Montoya earned her team-high eighth goal of the season, while Gina Steiner's assist on the first goal puts her into a tie with Madelyn Robbins for the team-lead in the category with four.
- Naemi Hausen's goal means she has become the second Knight (along with Martínez-Montoya) to reach double figures in points. She sits at ten, with four goals and two assists.
- Isabelle Udovc's two-assist game marks her first assists on the season, and her second multi-point game of her career – having logged a goal and two assists on 3/9/21 against Wagner.
- It was a dominant team performance as the Knights outshot the Mountaineers 17-3, with Malene Nielsen called into action to make a pair of saves.
Coach Teepe's Thoughts
"Overall, I think we played a very good game. Anytime you don't let the team have more than three shots, and you put almost 20 on goal, you're doing all the right things. The problem for me is that we kind of look for the perfect goal, and we are not courageous enough in the final third. But overall, it's one of our goals to be in the NEC Tournament, and we're in the tournament now."
"We've had so many overtimes this year, but at the same time [the team] learns to play in them. They knew that they wanted to win and guarantee that they were in the playoffs today."
What's Next
The Knights finish out their regular season with a Senior Day on Halloween as the Knights host Howard at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 31. The match will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
