DeAngelo Hits Game-Winner in Knights Thrilling 55-54 Win Over CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Sophomore Sierra DeAngelo connected on a game-winning jumper with 24.0 seconds remaining as FDU (4-3,1-2 NEC) came away with a thrilling 55-54 conference win over Central Connecticut State (1-2,1-2 NEC) on Saturday night at Detrick Gymnasium.

DeAngelo led the Knights with a double-double as she scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds. Junior Lindsey Mack netted nine points and senior Madison Stanley scored seven points to go along with seven rebounds.

Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"This was a great team win against a talented Central team that can be attributed to our team defense and rebounding," said coach Szumilo following the Knights win. "We challenged the team defensively after giving up 23 points in the first quarter alone and they responded well as we only allowed 31 more points in the remaining three quarters."

"Sierra came off the bench and gave us huge minutes on both ends of the court, which resulted in a double-double."

How it Happened
  • The Blue Devils led by six after the first quarter of action as Devyn Scott paced the Knights with five points and Mack scored four.
  • CCSU pushed its lead to as many as 11 points early in the second quarter led by a three-pointer from Forever Toppin, but DeAngelo heated up as she scored the Knights next five points and the Knights ended the second quarter on a 12-4 run over the last 6:32 led by five points from both freshman Chloe Wilson and sophomore Maria Roters as FDU tied the game at 34-34 going into the locker room.
  • FDU scored the first four points of the third on baskets from Scott and sophomore Celia Carbonell to take a 38-34 lead and both defenses controlled the pace for the rest of the quarter as there were a combined 14 points over the final 8:31 of the frame as the Knights took a 44-42 lead into the fourth.
  • The Burgundy and Blue scored on their first two possessions of the fourth to gain a 49-42 lead that was sparked by a Mack three-pointer, but the Blue Devils cut into the lead as the score got to 51-50 with 5:02 remaining.
  • From the 5:02 mark until 1:14 left in the game, neither team scored, but Mack connected on a driving layup to her left to give the Knights a 53-50 lead.
  • Ashley Forker and Jamey Napoleon combined to score the next four points as the Blue Devils took a 54-53 lead, but DeAngelo connected on a jumper off a pass from Roters to give the Knights a 55-54 lead with 24.0 seconds remaining and FDU's defense forced a miss as they pulled away with a 55-54 conference win.
