Three Score in Double Figures in Loss to Saint Francis U

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Freshman Abby Conklin scored a career-high 15 points but the Fairleigh Dickinson women's basketball team (3-3, 0-2 NEC) fell 64-48 to Saint Francis U (3-4, 2-0 NEC) on Wednesday afternoon inside the Rothman Center.

Conklin shot 5-9 from behind the arc and grabbed three rebounds. Sophomores Sierra DeAngelo and Maria Roters also scored in double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Coach Szumilo's Thoughts
"Credit SFU for their game plan," said coach Szumilo following the loss. "They were the better team in both games. Any loss hurts, but we will use these two games as opportunities for growth. We have to make better decisions on offense as well as get tougher on defense and get stops when we need to get stops."

"I'm proud of our young team as they put up a fight today even though the final score might not indicate so. We could have folded, but we didn't. Had we gotten a couple more stops when we cut it to four halfway through the 3rd quarter, it could have been a different ball game. We are learning a lot about ourselves in these early conference games and we will fix what we need to fix."

How it Happened
  • Both defenses set the tone early in the contest as there were only 10 points scored in the first six minutes of action, but the Red Flash ended the first quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 19-9 lead, with FDU junior Madeline Selvaggi leading the Knights by scoring three first quarter points.
  • Conklin caught fire early in the second quarter as she connected on three straight three-pointers to spark a 9-2 run over the first 3:48 of the period to cut the deficit to two points, but the Red Flash scored 13 unanswered points to end the frame to take a 34-18 lead into the half.
  • The Knights cut the deficit to four points with 4:10 left in the third as they opened the third quarter on a 17-5 run sparked by an and-one layup from sophomore Maria Roters and three-pointers from Conklin and Selvaggi, but SFU ended the quarter by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to take a 50-39 lead into the final frame.
  • The Burgundy and Blue got as close as eight points of the lead twice in the fourth on Conklin's fifth three-pointer of the game and a Roters back-door layup, but SFU prevailed 64-48.
