Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Christa Waterman netted the Knights' lone goal in the Burgundy and Blue's 1-1 draw against William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Maja Skansberg recorded an assist on Waterman's goal.

"I was really happy with our game today and we had multiple players step up for our team," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We are heading in the right direction as a team and we have to find this consistent level of play every time we go out."

FDU (1-2-3) came out of the gates aggressive early as freshman Naemi Hausen rifled a shot in the fifth minute that was saved by senior Katelyn Briguglio in the center of the net. Junior Victorija Miseljic also created a shot attempt in the 14th minute that earned the Knights a corner kick.

Skansberg then sent a ball in to Waterman, who buried her first goal of the year in the 15th minute. The assist was Skansberg's second of the season to give the Knights a 1-0 edge.

William & Mary (2-3-1) junior Alex Kuhnle then marched down the field off the ensuing kickoff and booted a shot in on goal that was saved by senior Amanda Fitzgerald. Hausen and William & Mary sophomore Renee Kohler exchanged shots within a two minute span as each team continued to pepper shots.

The Tribe responded to the Knights with a goal of their own in the 26th minute off a shot from junior Lauren Kelly. Kelly received a pass from junior Courtney Miles and just beat the outstretched arm of Fitzgerald.

FDU junior Alexiane Marquis created an opportunity in the 37th minute when she aimed bottom left at the goal but Briguglio saved the shot. Burgundy and Blue sophomore Isabelle Udovc attempted the final shot of the half in the 44th minute but again Briguglio came up with a big save to keep the game tied at 1-1.

The Burgundy and Blue kept their aggressive approach entering the second half as sophomore Madelyn Robbins and Hausen fired shots at the goal. Tribe freshman Kayleigh Shackford got behind the Knights defense in the 51st minute but Fitzgerald was able to make a save on her shot.

Miseljic marched back down the field and got past the Tribe defense and fired a shot that again was saved by Briguglio. Each team then traded corner kicks within a minute with both defenses denying the offense of a goal. FDU junior Sofia Albertsson, the Knights season-leading goal scorer attempted her first shot on goal of the game in the 74th minute but again Briguglio recorded a save. After Albertsson's strike, there were no other shots on goal and the Knights headed to overtime for the third time this season.

FDU sophomore Lea Egner created a chance in the 94th minute after maneuvering her way through the Tribe's backline but had her shot saved by Briguglio. Egner generated the other shot on goal in the overtime period that again was denied by Briguglio. The Knights defense only allowed one shot attempt in overtime number one.

Kohler rifled a shot attempt in the 102nd minute that was saved by Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald played the ball out to her teammates and they were off to the races when Albertsson received the pass. Albertsson had her shot attempt stopped again. Each team created a corner kick opportunity throughout the rest of overtime number two, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Burgundy and Blue played 20 players in the match and 11 of them recorded a shot attempt.

The Knights next game will be played on Thursday, September 12, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Hofstra in a non-conference match.
