Women's Soccer Falls Short Against Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team falls to 1-3-3 on the season after its 2-1 loss on Thursday night against Hofstra. Burgundy and Blue sophomore Lea Egner was credited with the Knights goal after servicing the ball into the box and it bounced in off a Pride defender.

"I felt we played a strong first half and were resilient in responding to Hofstra's goal to even the score," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We did a great job of passing the ball out to the weak side of the defense and found great opportunities. We are still growing as a team, but played well against a very well respected CAA team in Hofstra."

Hofstra (4-3) came out aggressive right away as the Pride's season-leading scorer junior Lucy Porter rifled a shot that went just right of the net in the second minute. Porter marched back down the field in the ninth minute but FDU senior Amanda Fitzgerald stopped the shot. Fellow Pride junior Lucy Shepherd also fired a shot attempt in the 12th minute and Fitzgerald denied the shot.

The Pride broke through in the 14th minute when Porter connected on a strike that just went over the shoulder of Fitzgerald. Hofstra junior Jordan Littleboy and sophomore Miri Taylor tallied assists on the play.

The Knights offense got going and responded in the 24th minute when Miseljic got behind the Pride's defense and had a shot get blocked and roll out of bounds. Egner then took the corner kick attempt for the Knights and serviced it into the middle of the defense, where Miseljic and a Pride defender jostled for the ball that found the back of the net. The Egner goal was her second of the season, which is now tied for the team lead with junior Sofia Albertsson.

Hofstra junior Sabrina Bryan then fired a shot to the bottom center of the goal that Fitzgerald made a save on. Fitzgerald recorded her final save of the first half by making a play on freshman Brianna Passaro's shot towards the top of the goal. "I felt our defense did a great job of forcing Hofstra into difficult shots that Amanda could make plays on," stated Teepe.

The Pride opened the second half by scoring a goal in the 47th minute off the foot of Porter. The goal was Porter's second of the contest and Bryan recorded an assist on the play.

Fitzgerald then came up big again for the Knights by making a save in the right corner of the net on a Shepherd shot. "Amanda continues to be the back stopper for our team and we can count on her to make saves," said Teepe. "She gets better every game and works so hard at her craft."

FDU seniors Sam Roff and Stasi Torchia looked to even up the score with a pair of shots that just missed the net. Littleboy was able to get behind the Knights defense in the 68th minute but Fitzgerald again made a great save on the shot. The Knights possessed the ball for much of the middle part of the second half, but couldn't get behind the Pride's backline and ultimately fell 2-1.

Fitzgerald recorded eight saves in the contest and 18 different Knights played in tonight's contest.

The Knights will play again on Sunday, September 15 when they take on non-conference opponent Binghamton at 1 p.m.
