TEANECK, N.J.— The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team fell 1-0 in a fast-paced contest against Monmouth on Friday night at University Stadium. SeniorÂ
Amanda Fitzgerald led the Knights with seven saves in net.
"We have to find a way win the ball so we have possession and we just didn't do enough of that tonight," said head coachÂ
Eric Teepe. "We did get a lot of players substantial minutes and I feel that they did well for us in the time they played."
Monmouth (1-2-1) came out of the gates quickly with a shot on goal by senior Madie Gibson but Fitzgerald recorded a save on the strike. Gibson again got behind the FDU defense in the seventh minute and rocketed a shot on net but once again, Fitzgerald was up to the challenge. FDU (1-2-2) created its first chance in the 11
th minute when they earned a corner kick that was serviced in by sophomoreÂ
Lea Egner.
The next 10 minutes of action consisted of each team possessing the ball but both defenses did a great job of keeping their marked player in front of them. The Burgundy and Blue rifled its first shot of the game when freshmanÂ
Naemi Hausen launched a ball to the middle of the net but senior Amanda Knaub nabbed the save.
The Knights created another corner kick opportunity in the 35th minute, but weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net. The Hawks responded with three corner kicks of their own over the final 10 minutes of the half but Fitzgerald did a great job directing traffic in front of the net and made some nice plays on the ball. "I felt Amanda did a great job of stopping their chances in the box and if she doesn't make those plays it isn't a close game," Teepe remarked about his goalkeeper's play.
The Hawks continued to apply pressure on the Knights defense with a pair of shots within a minute from senior Dana Scheriff and Gibson but once again Fitzgerald thwarted the chances.
In the 79
th minute, the Hawks generated a breakaway opportunity when sophomore Lauren Karabin snuck past the Knights defense but Fitzgerald came charging out of her cage, dove, and made a fantastic play on the ball to maintain the shutout.
The Hawks eventually broke the tie in the 83
rd minute when Scheriff found Karabin near the left side of the goal. Karabin promptly sent her shot past the outstretched arm of Fitzgerald to the right corner of the net for the deciding strike.
Â
Three minutes later, the Knights came down the field and created a corner kick opportunity. The ball was serviced into the box and found Egner's foot but she sailed it just over the crossbar.
The Knights attempted six shots in total with Hausen's team-high two attempts leading the way.

The Burgundy and Blue's next contest is set for this Sunday, September 8 when they travel to William & Mary for a non-conference tilt at 1:00 p.m. Â
