Volleyball Falls at CCSU in Three Sets

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team fell in straight sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 to Central Connecticut State on Saturday night at Detrick Gymnasium.

Junior Magdalena Maksimovic and freshman Mujay Mambu tallied eight kills apiece in the loss, while second-year libero Jaelyn Young finished with 18 digs.

The Blue Devils (5-9, 1-1 NEC) received 13 kills from Madelyn Kaaprelyn, 12 kills from Emma Henderson and 11 kills from Isabelle Roufs in the three-set win. The home team also posted a .304 attack percentage, while limiting the Knights (0-14, 0-2 NEC) to .106 in the match.

In the opening game of the contest, the Knights overcame a pair of early deficits. Three kills from Maksimovic helped the Burgundy and Blue score four straight points and even things at 17-all. The teams proceeded to exchange the next four points before the Blue Devils captured a 21-19 edge. A kill from Mambu would bring the Knights to within one before the home team scored the final four tallies and took a 1-0 match lead.

The Knights fell behind 11-7 in the second and never closed the gap. After a kill by sophomore Sophia Spiridonakos sliced the deficit back to four, the Blue Devils scored the final five points – including three kills by Henderson – to nab a 2-0 cushion.

A Mambu kill sandwiched by two Blue Devil errors resulted in a 3-0 lead for the Knights in the third frame however, the home team netted six of the next seven points to gain the lead. Trailing 9-8, the Knights saw the Blue Devils score five straight points and establish a cushion they would not surrender.

The Burgundy and Blue are back in action on Tuesday, October 1 when they visit Manhattan. First serve in the non-conference tilt is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
