VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior
Alexiane Marquis netted the Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team's lone goal in the Knights 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon to Binghamton at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
"I felt we created some great chances in the first half and did a great job of possessing the ball," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "When they scored early in the game, I felt we did a great job of responding with a goal from Alexiane. We have to start being more consistent and play well from start to finish."
The Knights (1-4-3) started the game off with the ball and immediately earned a corner kick opportunity. Binghamton (6-2) cleared the corner kick away and gained possession for the first time in the contest. FDU junior
Sofia Albertsson earned a free kick in the third minute and had her shot sail just high of the goal. The Burgundy and Blue continued to dominate possession early as sophomore
Madelyn Robbins got behind the Bearcats defense but fired high of the net.
Marquis created a great chance is the 13th minute when she had her shot blocked, got her own rebound, and had a shot miss a little bit high. FDU junior
Cassandra Marcoux recorded her first save of the game off a shot from junior midfielder Dora Hayes in the 14th minute. Over the next four minutes, the Knights earned four free kick opportunities but weren't able to score off the chances.
The Bearcats then netted the first goal of the game when sophomore forward Stefania Piantadosi was able to connect in the lower part of the goal with an assist going to junior Ivana Pjetri in the 26th minute. The possession then continued to change over the next eight minutes before Marcoux made another big save on a shot from freshman Olivia McKnight. The final shot of the first half that went on goal came off the foot of Binghamton junior Essie Bonney that was again saved by Marcoux.
Binghamton earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 48th minute but Marcoux made a remarkable kick save on Hayes' penalty shot. "Cassandra was confident on the play and dove the right way, making a great save on the ball."
The Knights gained momentum after the Marcoux save as they tied the game up in the 52nd minute when junior
Alyssa Caggiano serviced a ball into the box that eventually found the foot of Marquis and she buried a goal. The goal was Marquis' first of her career. "Alexiane got rewarded for her effort and has worked hard to get onto the field."
Hayes then came back down the field and rifled a shot that went high of the goal. The Bearcats regained the lead in the 61st minute when Hayes connected on a header on the ball that was serviced in by Pjetri off a free kick.
The Knights refused to go away as their offense marched back down the field and created a corner kick opportunity but the Bearcats were able to clear the attempt. Albertsson then got behind Binghamton's defense and rifled a shot that was saved by sophomore Haylee Poltorak in the 63rd minute. The Albertsson shot attempt wound up being the Knights final opportunity of the game as the Bearcats implemented a bend but don't break defense. The Burgundy and Blue possessed the ball longer in the game than Binghamton but ultimately fell 2-1.
For the game, FDU fired seven shots with two of them getting on goal. Marcoux recorded four saves in the contest. The Knights played 17 players in the game.
The Burgundy and Blue will next play on Wednesday, September 18, at 4 p.m. when they open conference play on the road against LIU.
