Women's Soccer Blanks Rider in 0-0 Draw

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team played to their second consecutive draw after shutting out Rider in a 0-0 match on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

"We came out and possessed the ball in the first half, but didn't really create any good chances," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We found our game in the second half and created some quality chances, but we just couldn't find the back of the net today."

Early in the game, each team was feeling the other out and trying to pick up on tendencies. The Burgundy and Blue (1-1-2) generated the first scoring chance of the game in the seventh minute when sophomore Lea Egner rifled a shot in the box that junior Carmen Carbonell recorded a save on. Rider (2-0-1) sophomore Nikki Arrington, the Broncs leading scorer so far this year, attempted her first shot in the 10th minute that went wide left of the goal.

The Broncs created a corner kick opportunity in the 13th minute, but FDU junior Viktorija Miseljic headed the ball out of harms way. Both teams then traded possession, but both defenses kept the opposing offenses out of the zone for the following 10 minutes. The Knights attempted their first corner of the game after senior Stasi Torchia had a shot in the box get blocked and go out of play. FDU sophomore Christa Waterman created a shot off the corner but just missed the mark.

Burgundy and Blue senior Amanda Fitzgerald recorded her first save on the game on a right footed boot from freshman Makenzie Rodrigues in the 24th minute. The Knights offense continued to try to break through the Rider backline for the rest of the half but couldn't generate a shot on goal. Defensively, FDU also kept the Broncs to one shot over the final 20 minutes of the first half.

The Knights offense ramped up the intensity early in the second half, as senior Jackson Bennett and junior Sofia Albertsson each fired chances on goal that were stopped by Carbonell. Albertsson's shot was punched out of bounds, earning the Burgundy and Blue a corner kick. As the pace of the game picked up, Arrington broke through the Knights defense, but Fitzgerald came up with a big save on the ball. Fitzgerald kicked the ball out and started a counter, which saw Albertsson have a shot saved and Miseljic was in front of the goal, but sent a shot just wide.

In the 63rd minute, the Knights earned another corner kick opportunity, and the service found the head of Bennett, but her shot went high of the goal. The Broncs responded with a pair of shots from senior Valeria Pascuet and sophomore Niamh Cashin, but neither found the back of the net.

FDU created their best chance of the game in the 82nd minute when junior Alexiane Marquis received a pass, and her shot went off the post. Knight sophomore Noam Kedem also had a pair of great chances but sent one wide of the mark, and the other was saved by Carbonell. Marquis created another opportunity in the 90th minute, but again Carbonell came up huge for the Broncs and saved the right-footed shot.

Less than two minutes into the first overtime, Rider senior Emily Curteis dribbled the ball up the field and drew a foul in the box to earn her team a penalty kick opportunity. With the FDU crowd up on its feet, Pascuet stepped up and took the shot against Fitzgerald but sent it wide left of the mark. After the penalty shot, Bennett attempted the final two shots of the first overtime, but neither got on goal.

Torchia and the Knights peppered three more shot attempts that didn't find the back of the net in the second overtime. Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the second overtime, and for the game, FDU outshot the Broncs 22 to 12.

Fitzgerald recorded her 12th career shutout, which now puts her in a second-place tie with Felicia Burr for the most shutouts in program history. The shutout was also the Burgundy and Blue's first of the season.

The Knights will host the final game of their three game home-stand on Friday at 7 p.m., when they take on non-conference opponent Monmouth.
