Stasi Torchia netted the Knights lone goal in a contest that resulted in a 1-1 draw against Lehigh on Thursday night at University Stadium.
"I felt we controlled the game for 60 minutes and generated multiple chances after being up a goal that could have increased the lead to 2-0, but we just could not increase the lead," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "In the end, it may be a fair result, but it is still early and we are trying to rotate different players into the game to help prepare for physical battles to come."
The Mountain Hawks (0-1-2) created the first chance of the game in the 12th minute on a shot off the foot of senior Mary Casey, but FDU senior
Amanda Fitzgerald recorded a nice save on the boot. FDU (1-1-1) controlled possession of the ball early in the game and sophomore
Lea Egner rifled the Knights first shot of the night just wide. The Burgundy and Blue continued to attack the Lehigh backline and broke through in the 25th minute.
Egner took a corner kick from the far-left corner, passed it in to freshman
Maja Skansberg, who serviced the ball into the middle and Torchia was in the right place to boot the ball into the back of the net. "Stasi went up strong among the defenders and continues to show her commitment," stated Teepe about Torchia.
The goal was Torchia's first of the season. Egner recorded her second assist and Skansberg tallied her first collegiate helper on the goal.
FDU junior
Viktorija Miseljic then had a chance in the 28th minute, but junior Miranda Royds recorded a save on the play. Royds made another big save less than three minutes later on a boot from Egner to keep the deficit at only one goal. The Knights defense was terrific through one half as they only allowed one shot while the offense generated five chances.
Burgundy and Blue freshman
Naemi Hausen broke through the Mountain Hawks defense in the 52nd minute and ripped a shot on goal that Royds again made a nice save on. Fitzgerald then made a great save on fellow senior Annika Jansa's shot in the 61st minute. The Knights created their best chance of the second half when sophomore
Madelyn Robbins received the ball and fired one that hit the crossbar. She then got her own rebound, but shot it just wide of the net.
Lehigh tied the game up in the 80th minute when sophomore Abby Furtmann stole the ball and dished it over to junior Lisa Kestelboym, who had a shot find the back-left corner of the net. The Kestelboym goal was Lehigh's first of the season.
Mountain Hawk senior Kayla Arestivo then created two quality chances on goal following the equalizer from Kestelboym, but Fitzgerald came up big with two huge saves after being the aggressor in finding the ball. "The one thing you always know with Amanda is she's always going to make the big play for you and she continues to do that for us," added Teepe about his netminder.
Each team recorded two more chances in regulation and brought the game into overtime. In the first overtime, Lehigh produced the first shot attempt but fired it wide of the goal. Fitzgerald once again came up huge for the Knights as she got a finger tip on a shot off the foot of sophomore Rebecca Van Siclen in the 98th minute to help the ball just graze the post and keep the game going.
Van Slicen received a nice pass to start the second overtime, but again Fitzgerald got the better of her as she saved the ball on a diving effort. The Mountain Hawks continued to put pressure on the Knights backline. Burgundy and Blue freshman
Cayla Waterman made a nice move to get behind the Lehigh defense, but Royds saved Waterman's shot as time expired in the second overtime.
Each team recorded eight shots on goal and each goalie recorded seven saves. FDU played 21 players in a 110 minute rock fight and junior
Alexiane Marquis, Waterman, Hausen, Skansberg, and freshman
Nina Carlomusto each made their debuts at University Stadium.
The Knights will return to action on Sunday, September 1, at 12 p.m. when they host Rider in a non-conference match at University Stadium.
