Women's Soccer Falls 4-1 To Miami (Fla.)

EDINBURG, Texas – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season to the University of Miami by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Sophomore Lea Egner scored the Knights goal in the 56th minute.

Egner, freshman Maja Skansberg, and senior Stasi Torchia were named to the UTRGV All-Tournament Team for their performances against Alabama State and Miami.

"This was a great learning experience for us against a good ACC team," said head coach Eric Teepe. "I was happy with our time of possession and we had a couple of unlucky bounces, but I felt if we capitalized on some more chances we would've been right there in the end. We battled every second and I'm proud of how hard our team played."

The Hurricanes (2-0) struck early in the contest with a goal in the fifth minute of action off the foot of junior Tia Dupont off a pass from freshman Ine Ostmo. Playing from behind, the Knights (1-1) started being more aggressive down the field and generated their first shot of the game in the ninth minute from junior Sofia Albertsson off a free kick.

FDU sophomore Madelyn Robbins rifled a shot in the 13th minute that Miami sophomore goalie Tyler Speaks got a hand on to record the save. The Knights continued to push the ball down the field as they generated multiple free kicks. Skansberg created a chance after one of the free kicks, but the shot went just wide of the goal.

Hurricane freshman Maria Jakobsdottir rifled a shot at goal in the 17th minute, but was denied by a nice save from senior Amanda Fitzgerald. Albertsson created another Knight chance at goal in the 29th minute that was saved by Speaks.

Egner then had a pair of shot attempts miss in the 32nd minute as FDU continued knocking on the door. Knight senior Jackson Bennett put another shot on goal, but Speaks made another save.

Miami extended their lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute off a penalty kick from Ostmo. The Hurricanes struck again before the end of the half with a goal from freshman Emma Tucker. FDU junior Alexiane Marquis had a shot saved by Speaks in the 43rd minute.

Fitzgerald opened the second half with a save off a shot from junior Alexa Ferreira. Egner cut into the deficit in the 56th minute after sophomore Madelyn Robbins had her shot saved by freshman Melissa Dagenais and Egner booted in the rebound. Fitzgerald then went on to make a save a minute later off a strike from freshman Taylor Shell.

Skansberg and the Knights also got one goal closer to the lead when she booted a shot that was saved by Dagenais. Burgundy and Blue junior Viktorija Miseljic generated a shot on goal in the 87th minute, but Dagenais recorded a save.

Hurricane senior Lauren Markwith scored the final goal of the game in the 82nd minute off a pass from fellow senior Kristina Fisher.

The Knights will host their home opener on Thursday, August 29, at University Stadium beginning at 7 p.m., against Lehigh.
