Former Knight Danielle McEwan Wins 2019 US Women's Open

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Former All-America Fairleigh Dickinson women's bowler Danielle McEwan won her second career professional major championship on Sunday night, winning the 2019 U.S. Women's Open.

McEwan, who was a three-time National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-America and three-time NEC Bowler of Year honoree, defeated top seed Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia in the title match, 201-199, to claim the championship green jacket and the $20,000 top price for her fifth Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour title. The event was held at Texas Star Lanes and was broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.

On winning the tournament title, McEwan said afterward, "This was one of my top goals – to win the U.S. Women's Open. When you look at the people who have won this event, they're the best in our sport. To add my name along theirs is amazing."

McEwan needed to fill 28 pins in the final frame of the match to secure the win, and in that final frame, the former Knight delivered a pair of strikes and then nine additional pins on her final roll to win the match by two pins. She was one of five finalists competing in the final round Sunday after the field had been weeded down from 24 competitors determined by total pinfall, including bonus pins, for 56 games.

The Stony Brook, New York, native also won the 2015 PWBA Tour Championship for her first major title, and she has now totaled five PWBA titles since joining the PWBA in 2015. Earlier this year, McEwan became the first bowler to ever be inducted into the NEC Hall of Fame.

McEwan has been competing for Team USA since 2012 and is currently third in the PWBA standings for points this season. She last September also won the PBA International-World Bowling Tour Thailand event and was the WBT Finals champion in both 2016 and 2017.

While competing for the Knights, McEwan helped lead the Knights to the 2010 NCAA National Championship as a freshman and was the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She was also named the NEC Rookie of the Year in 2010 before going on to earn three consecutive NEC Player of the Year Awards from 2011-13. In those years, she was also a three-time First Team All-America and Academic All-America honoree, and was named the NCAA Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013.
