Cohn Tosses Two-Hit Complete Game Shutout as Knights Sweep Twinbill with Saint Peter's

TEANECK, N.J. – Sophomore Aaron Cohn pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout and senior catcher Evan McDonald homered twice as the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team swept Saint Peter's 18-8 and 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights (10-29-1) piled on the offense in game one before Cohn twirled a seven-inning gem in game two.

Game One: FDU 18, Saint Peter's 8
In Saturday's opener, the Knights started fast and never looked back as they amassed 18 runs on 15 hits and took advantage of five miscues by the Peacocks (2-35).

Nate Brodsky, who finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, opened the game by clobbering the first pitch he saw over the centerfield fence for a solo blast. Brodsky's homer was the first of two in the inning because with two away in the frame, freshman Tom Ruscitti launched a two-run home run and established a 3-0 lead for the Burgundy and Blue.

Ruscitti's blast was his team-leading ninth of the season. The Knights' right fielder would finish 2-for-3 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored in the win.

Leading 5-3 in the fifth, the Knights broke the game open by scoring six runs on three hits. Three bases-loaded free passes aided the effort before Mike Veit and Tony Socci each singled in a run as the Knights built an 11-3 cushion.

In the eighth, the Burgundy and Blue added on to their lead with a run-scoring single by Brad Levinson, a two-run triple from Socci and an RBI double by Brodsky.

The 18 runs were more than enough for starter Brendan Medoro, who pitched six innings allowed four runs (two earned) and struck out three to earn his team-leading fifth win of the season.

Game Two: FDU 6, Saint Peter's 0
After the 18-run outburst in game one, the offense slowed down in game two as the Knights scored six runs on six hits.

Cohn was the story in the win as he turned in his second straight quality start and the Knights' first complete game of the season. The right-hander held the Peacocks to just two hits, while walking one and striking out four to move to 3-1 on the campaign.

With Cohn holding down the Saint Peter's offense, McDonald supplied the firepower. With two men on, the senior unloaded on an 0-2 pitch and deposited it over the centerfield fence, which gave the Knights a 3-0 first-inning lead.

In the second, freshman George Rosales knocked in Socci with a single in the second before an error by the Peacocks allowed another to cross.

Leading 5-0 in the third, McDonald drove the sixth pitch of his at bat over the rightfield fence for an opposite-field solo shot. The home run – his eighth of the season – came two pitches after he hit a blast to nearly the same spot, however, that one sliced foul.

The six-run cushion would hold for the final four frames as Cohn breezed through the Saint Peter's lineup and finalized the Saturday sweep.

These two teams meet for another doubleheader tomorrow. Saint Peter's will serve as the home team but due to the weather forecast the games will be played at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for noon.
