TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team continued its scoring barrage as it logged double-digit runs for the third straight game and completed a three-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's with a 14-7 victory at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights (6-24-1, 5-7 NEC) amassed 16 hits and slugged three more home runs in the win as they totaled 11 home runs and 39 runs over the three-game weekend.
Freshman catcher
George Rosales led the charge with a 4-for-5 effort, which included his first career home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Fellow freshmen
Salvatore Monticciolo and
Tom Ruscitti also contributed in a big way for the Burgundy and Blue in the win. Monticciolo finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and his NEC-leading eighth home run of the season, while Ruscitti contributed a 2-for-3 day with his seventh homer of the campaign and three RBI.
Sophomore
Austin Crebs (2-1) came on in relief of starter
Griffin Gilbert to earn the win, tossing 3.2 innings of three-run baseball, allowing three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
For Mount St. Mary's (11-23, 5-7 NEC), Thomas Bramley topped the box score offensively with a 2-for-4, three-RBI effort.
"This was a great weekend for our program and now we are right back in the NEC postseason hunt," said first-year head coach
Justin McKay following the win. "We were fortunate as some breaks went our way this weekend but we took full advantage. Our young team is growing and really coming together. I am so proud of these guys and appreciate all of the support from our fans."
After the Knights fell behind 2-0 in the early going, they broke loose for seven runs in the third inning. Rosales started things with a single,
Nate Rush reached on an error and
Nate Brodsky and
Mike Veit followed with RBI singles, which brought Ruscitti to the dish.
Rusictti stepped in and clobbered a 3-1 pitch over the center-field fence for a three-run homer and gave the Knights a 5-2 lead, however, the Burgundy and Blue were far from done. After
Evan McDonald followed with a double, the next batter Monticciolo, ripped a two-run shot over the right-field fence to extend the lead to five.
Leading 7-4 in the fifth, Rush provided an RBI single and the Knights broke the game wide open in the sixth. Five hits led to five runs including a two-run double by Monticciolo and run-scoring knocks by Rosales, Rush and
Adam Frank.
Rosales would register the Knights' final run of the contest with a solo blast in the eighth as the Knights solidified their lead and completed their first series sweep of 2019. The 16 FDU hits are the most by the team in a game since they logged 21 against Sacred Heart back in 2017.
The Burgundy and Blue will look to continue their momentum when they visit St. John's for their next outing this Tuesday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m.
