Monticciolo Socks Ninth Home Run in Loss at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped a non-conference tilt at St. John's 11-4 at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Knights (7-25-1) saw their three-game winning streak snapped by the Big East's Red Storm (20-13).

Freshman Salvatore Monticciolo reached base in all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with two RBI including his Northeast Conference-leading ninth home run of the season.

The Knights used five pitchers in the contest with sophomore right-hander Peter Theodorellis having the most success. Theodorellis provided two innings of scoreless relief and pitched around four walks to keep the Red Storm off of the board.

Ryan Markey led the Red Storm attack with three RBI in a 2-for-4 effort. The home team logged five extra-base hits and 11 hits in total on the afternoon.

A first-inning double by Evan McDonald resulted in the Knights' first run and he would score on failed double-steal attempt, which made it a 2-0 game before the Red Storm came to bat.

Markey delivered an RBI single in the home half of the inning and the Red Storm would strike for four more runs in the second to stake a 5-2 lead after two.

Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, Monticciolo sliced the deficit in half with a two-run shot, which hooked over the right-field fence and knocked home classmate Tony Socci, who had reached with a leadoff walk.

After Monticciolo's blast, the Burgundy and Blue would not get any closer than 6-4 as the Red Storm added two in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away with the victory.

The Knights return to NEC action for their next three games as they welcome LIU Brooklyn (12-20, 5-7 NEC) to the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex for a crucial conference series beginning this Thursday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m. The two teams are currently tied for fifth in the NEC standings.
