The Series
The Knights went 1-3 in a four-game series against the Mount last year in Emmitsburg. FDU won a close game two, 3-2, however the Mountaineers managed to come away with a win in games one, three and four. The victory in game two was the lone conference victory for the Knights in 2018.
Scouting Mount
The Mountaineers enter this weekend's showdown with a 6-9 overall record, and are coming off of an 11-7 loss to Navy on Wednesday. Last weekend the Mount opened conference play with three-game series that saw them drop two out of three to Wagner. They are looking to follow up on their best regular season in ten years, a 2018 campaign that saw them qualify for the NEC tournament for the first time since 2008. The Mount are led by sophomore utility player Myles Nicholson at the plate, who leads the team in total hits with 21, and is currently hitting .421 with seven RBI's and seven extra-base hits.
As a team, the Mount leads the NEC in batting average (.271), slugging percentage (.413), on-base percentage (.386), and is second in total bases at 90. Despite their dynamic numbers offensively, they also rank dead last in fielding percentage (.941) and rank second in errors at 15.
Burgundy and Blue Report
Although the Knights are winless in their last 13, they have still enjoyed some strong individual performances at the plate so far this season. FDU currently has four qualified batters hitting at least .289 or better, with three averaging well over .300 on the season. Evan McDonald (.308), Nate Brodsky (.321), and Mike Veit (.325) lead the way at the dish for the Burgundy and Blue, while Salvatore Monticciolo paces the team with 12 RBI's. As a unit, the Knights rank third in batting average (.245), slugging percentage (.301), on-base percentage (.366) and so far have fewer strike outs (43) than every other NEC squad.
The Knights have scored first in each of their last five games, and have finished with double-digit hits in three of those five. In the four-game series with Penn last week, freshman right-hander Griffin Gilbert made the first start of his FDU career on the mound, giving up four hits and two earned runs over three innings in a losing effort.
Game Two starter Brendan Medoro leads all FDU hurlers with 22 total innings pitched to go with a 5.73 ERA. Corporan has been the Knights most efficient starter in 2019, posting a 3.18 ERA over 11.1 innings of work.
