Knights Overcome 11-Point Halftime Deficit to Win by Double-Digits at St. Francis Brooklyn

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 84-73 at the Pope P.E. Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights (12-12, 7-5 NEC) used a 23-5 second-half run to overtake the Terriers (14-11, 6-6 NEC) and sweep the season series.

Senior guard Darnell Edge spearheaded the attack with 25 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-16 from the field. Sophomore guard Jahlil Jenkins added 19 points and six assists, while senior forward Mike Holloway Jr. scored 14 points and sophomore forward Elyjah Williams tallied the Knights' first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Knights shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26) overall in the second half, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Their second-half shooting performance came after making just 1-of-7 from deep in the opening half.

In addition to shooting 55.4 percent for the game, the Knights out-rebounded the Terriers 39-29 in the contest. The Terriers, who lost for just the second time on their home floor this season, were led by Chauncey Hawkins' 14 points.

"That second half was probably the best defensive half of basketball we have played since I've been here at FDU," said head coach Greg Herenda following the victory. "We beat a very well-coached team in an extremely difficult building. I cannot be prouder of this group, especially coming off a difficult loss on Thursday night."

Herenda continued, "What can you say about Darnell? He led us today from start to finish. I told him to be aggressive offensively and he obviously took it to another level. On top of that, our bench was huge tonight. Brandon, Oscar and Tyler all made key contributions as well. That was simply a great conference road victory. Now we have four in a row at home and all we need to do is continue to improve."

Edge made his first three shots and scored the Knights' first seven points of the game but the Terriers led 18-11 midway through the opening half. Over that span, the Knights were hurt by seven miscues, which the Terriers converted into 10 points.

After the Knights used a 10-3 run to close to within one, the Terriers rebuilt their lead and established their first-double-digit cushion, 33-23, with under four minutes to play in the half.

The three-point shot proved crucial in the half as the Terriers finished with eight trifectas and carried a 41-30 lead into the locker room.

Edge paced the Knights in the stanza with 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field, while Williams scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds. The duo combined to make 9-of-14 from the field but the rest of the Knights totaled 4-of-16 (25 percent) overall.

In the half, the Knights knocked down just one of seven from behind the arc compared to the Terriers, whose eight made 3-pointers came on 17 tries.

For the Terriers, Keon Williams led the way with nine points – all via the three-point shot -- while Rosel Hurley scored eight points with three boards and three assists. As a team, the Terriers shot 46.9 percent overall.

The Knights erased the 11-point deficit and captured their first lead since the early going, 49-48, with 13:49 to play after Jenkins drove past his defender and finished a running right-handed layup. The sophomore point guard tallied seven points over the first seven minutes of the half and the Knights held the Terriers to 2-for-10 from the field during that span.

A three-play sequence which featured an emphatic dunk by Williams, a backdoor-cut layup by Edge and a Terriers shot-clock violation, kickstarted a 15-0 run by the Knights.

Williams would soar in for a putback slam, which gave the Knights their first double-digit lead of the game, 65-55, with under seven minutes to play in regulation.

Defensively, the Burgundy and Blue buckled down and held the Terriers scoreless for six minutes before Hawkins ended the drought with a layup.

A three-point play by Jenkins would provide the Knights with their largest lead of the afternoon, 15 points (72-57), with 4:27 remaining.

In the victory, freshman guard Brandon Powell provided the Knights with 22 minutes of action and dished our four assists – both career-highs.

The Knights return to action this Thursday, February 14 when they host Saint Francis U at the Rothman Center. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
